22 Stats That Prove That There Is Something Seriously Wrong With Young Men In America. We Have Raised An Entire Generation Of Young Males That Don’t Know How To Be Men, And Many Of Them Feel Completely Lost.

Young Men

When are we finally going to admit that we have a very serious problem with this generation of young men in America?  We have failed them so dramatically that it is hard to put it into words.  We have raised an entire generation of young males that don’t know how to be men, and many of them feel completely lost.  Sometimes they feel so lost that they “snap” in very destructive ways.  Adam Lanza and James Holmes are two names that come to mind.  Why is it that mass murderers are almost always young men?  Why don’t young women behave the same way?  Sadly, Adam Lanza and James Holmes are just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger problem in our society.  Our young women vastly outperform our young men in almost every important statistical category.  Young men are much more likely to perform poorly in school, they are much more likely to have disciplinary problems and they are much more likely to commit suicide.  In the old days, our young men would gather in the streets or in the parks to play with one another after school, but today most of them are content to spend countless hours feeding their addictions to video games, movies and other forms of entertainment.  When our young men grow up, many of them are extremely averse to taking on responsibility.  They want to have lots of sex, but they aren’t interested in marriage.  They enjoy the comforts of living at home, but they don’t want to go out and pursue career goals so that they can provide those things for themselves.  Our young men are supposed to be “the leaders of tomorrow”, but instead many of them are a major burden on society.  When are we finally going to admit that something has gone horribly wrong?

There is even a name for this generation of young men that does not want to grow up.  It is called the “Peter Pan generation”.  They want to enjoy the benefits of being grown up without ever taking on the responsibilities.  A member of this “Peter Pan generation” recent wrote an article for the Daily Mail in which he discussed what he and his friends are going through…

I haven’t yet had to grow up so, well, I haven’t.

Reckless, irresponsible and immature? Yes. But at least I can take comfort in the fact I am not alone.

Last week, I read that there is even a name for people such as me. We are the ‘Peter Pan generation’; a sizeable group of 25 to 40-year-olds who exist in a state of extended adolescence, avoiding the trappings of responsibility — marriage, mortgage, children — for as long as possible.

‘Our society is full of lost boys and girls hanging out at the edge of adulthood,’ says Professor Frank Furedi, a sociologist who has been studying this phenomenon, at the University of Kent.

‘Another word sometimes used to describe these people is “adultescent” — generally defined as someone who refuses to settle down and make commitments, and who would rather go on partying into middle age.’

Young men in America didn’t always behave this way.  Several decades ago, men in America moved away from home, got married and had children much earlier than they do now.  But the young men of today seem to want to put off the “markers of adulthood” for as long as possible.  The following is from an outstanding article by Sandy Hingston

Sociologists cite five “markers” or “milestones” that have traditionally defined our notion of adulthood: finishing school, moving away from the parental home, becoming financially independent, getting married, and having a child. In 1960, 65 percent of men had ticked off all five by age 30; by 2000, only a third had. The experts have plenty of explanations for what’s come to be called “extended adolescence” or “emerging adulthood”—or what New York Times columnist David Brooks calls the “Odyssey Years.” They blame helicopter parents, the burden of student loan debt, much higher poverty rates among young people (nearly half of all Americans ages 25 to 34 live below the national level), and a dearth of vo-tech training and manufacturing jobs. Almost 60 percent of parents are now giving money to their grown kids—an average of $38,340 per child in the years between ages 18 and 34. Whatever happened to the son looking after his mom?

So why is all of this happening?

Well, there are a whole host of reasons.  But certainly parents and our education system have to bear much of the blame.  In the old days, young men were taught what it means to “be a man”, and morality was taught to young men both by their parents and in the schools.  But today, most young men have very little understanding of what “manhood” is, and our society has taught them that morality doesn’t really matter.  Instead, television and movies constantly portray young men as sex-obsessed slackers that just want to party all the time, so that is what many of our young men have become.

How much better off would our society be if we had trained this generation of young men to love, honor, protect and take care of others?

How much better off would our society be if we had nurtured the manhood of our young men instead of teaching them to be ashamed of it?

How much better off would our society be if we had disciplined our young men and taught them morality when they were getting off track instead of just letting them do whatever they wanted?

The following are 22 stats that prove that there is something seriously wrong with young men in America today…

#1 Males account for approximately 70 percent of all Ds and Fs in U.S. public schools.

#2 About two-thirds of all students in “special education programs” are boys.

#3 The average American girl spends 5 hours a week playing video games.  The average American boy spends 13 hours a week playing video games.

#4 The average young American will spend 10,000 hours playing video games before the age of 21.

#5 One study discovered that 88 percent of all Americans between the ages of 8 and 18 play video games, and that video game addiction is approximately four times as common among boys as it is among girls.

#6 At this point, 15-year-olds that attend U.S. public schools do not even rank in the top half of all industrialized nations when it comes to math or science literacy.

#7 In 2011, SAT scores for young men were the worst that they had been in 40 years.

#8 According to a survey conducted by the National Geographic Society, only 37 percent of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 can find the nation of Iraq on a map.

#9 According to the New York Times, approximately 57 percent of all young people enrolled at U.S. colleges are women.

#10 It is being projected that women will earn 60 percent of all Bachelor’s degrees from U.S. universities by the year 2016.

#11 Even if they do graduate from college, most of our young men still can’t find a decent job.  An astounding 53 percent of all Americans with a bachelor’s degree under the age of 25 were either unemployed or underemployed during 2011.

#12 Pornography addiction is a major problem among our young men.  An astounding 30 percent of all Internet traffic now goes to pornography websites, and one survey found that 25 percent of all employees that have Internet access in the United States even visit sex websites while they are at work.

#13 In the United States today, 47 percent of all high school students have had sex.

#14 The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate on the entire planet.  If our young men behaved differently this would not be happening.

#15 In the United States today, one out of every four teen girls has at least one sexually transmitted disease.  If our young men were not sex-obsessed idiots running around constantly looking to “score” these diseases would not be spreading like this.

#16 Right now, approximately 53 percent of all Americans in the 18 to 24 year old age bracket are living at home with their parents.

#17 According to one survey, 29 percent of all Americans in the 25 to 34 year old age bracket are still living with their parents.

#18 Young men are nearly twice as likely to live with their parents as young women the same age are.

#19 Overall, approximately 25 million American adults are living with their parents in the United States right now according to Time Magazine.

#20 Today, an all-time low 44.2% of Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 are married.

#21 Back in 1950, 78 percent of all households in the United States contained a married couple.  Today, that number has declined to 48 percent.

#22 Young men are about four times more likely to commit suicide as young women are.

So what do you think about this generation of young men in America?  Please feel free to post a comment with your thoughts below…

it’s deliberately planned this way, I’m pretty sure. why did this happen 1st to blacks? [black women could get hired, but not black men.] women are more easily decieved and not as dangerous to have around.

    • AlRussell

Women are more easily deceived? Speak for yourself sweet cheeks! Not all of us are so “ignurnt.”

I don’t even know where to begin with some of the asinine comments on this page. What a load of sexist drivel. The fact is that more women are getting educated and employed because the discrimination that once held us back is dissipating. Now the world is seeing that women are easily as capable as men in today’s modern world. And before all you whiners start complaining about affirmative action, remember that the job market is the great equalizer. Women are getting more jobs because they are more qualified. Clearly, some folks are unhappy with this trend. The losers in any given scenario usually are. Go climb up the basement stairs and cry to your Mommas.

      • Susan Nercher

Women have always been obtaining more education than men. Even in the 1900s, more women have been graduating from high school and obtaining bachelor degrees when compared with men. Why? Because men were expected to work. Men’s value has always been how much money he can earn. Yes, women are easily capable in today’s modern world because it was mostly men who created the technology of this modern world. You don’t need to be 6’3, 210 pounds of solid muscle to get things done any more. Now you have automobiles, computers, the internet, etc. Yes, affirmative action has helped women, especially white women. And guess what, it is mostly white women who file discrimination cases against affirmative action policies. Also, many white women are on welfare. There is no need for women to climb up the basement stairs to cry to their Mommas because the state sends them the money – from the taxpayers – to pay for their basements, their welfare, their STD treatments and their abortions in addition to the affirmative action programs that favor them. How long will that last? As Margaret Thatcher stated – “the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

  • Enough Stereotypes Already

“#14 The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate on the entire planet. If our young men behaved differently this would not be happening.

#15 In the United States today, one out of every four teen girls has at least one sexually transmitted disease. If our young men were not sex-obsessed idiots running around constantly looking to “score” these diseases would not be spreading like this.”

So you’re saying all this sexual activity is rape?

The notion that past generations weren’t obsessed with “scoring” is simply laughable.

This list also seriously underplays the crippled and crippling economy that all those years of spending like drunken sailors in a whorehouse our oh-so-moral elders have left to us.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Ocelot/713275849 Jean Ocelot

Maybe there is such a high teen pregnancy rate because unlike earlier generations, today’s maiden just can’t keep her legs closed?

  • BazzaMcKenzie

The state disempowered parents (discipline’s out), so not surprising they aren’t doing a good job being parents. The state actively encouraged women to bring up children alone (paying them to do so and easing divorce with most benefits to wife), depriving the children of male role models, which is important to both sexes but especially to boys.

The fact that “women will earn 60 percent of all Bachelor’s degrees from U.S. universities by the year 2016” is not necessarily a relevant indicator, given a huge proportion of degrees are just a waste of time and add no value to their recipients or society.

“The average American girl spends 5 hours a week playing video games. The average American boy spends 13 hours a week playing video games.” So what? What’s the relative time spent on the phone or painting nails.

The US, like most of the Western world, has huge societal problems, most induced through the agency of government. But this list is rather slap dash, capturing some important points but a lot that are meaningless without context (eg demographic changes).

    • PT

“The average American girl spends 5 hours a week playing video games. The average American boy spends 13 hours a week playing video games.” So what? What’s the relative time spent on the phone or painting nails.

      – Excellent point, why didn’t I think of that?

  • PT

Do you really want to know “why men are no longer men” or do you just like writing these whinging articles, trying to make people feel guilty for being alive? Try this for starters:

I do not live in the US. But our country is similar.

Apologies to the women I might offend. You know who you are. I don’t. I wish I did. But now is not the time:

    1. Sports heroes are idolised. Academic geniuses are despised all the way through school. Anyone can feel like a hero simply by drinking too much alcohol. It’s time we made heroes out of those who work and achieve, and condemned alcohol and drugs for what they are. You feel like a hero? Any idiot can pour poison down his throat and feel like a hero. Go out and achieve something. BE a hero. No, that’s too hard. It’s easier to just chug drugs and FEEL like a hero. When the workers and achievers get the women, the bums might, just might, pay attention. But when the high performers are all alone, they will be rare. (See also the movie Idiocracy).

    2. Real men have a greater sense of responsibility than women. (Responsible women feel free to tell me that I am wrong. I’ve seen mostly irresponsible women, few irresponsible men but it could easily be that I am simply stuck in the wrong crowds.) So a man is less comfortable running up huge debts at university – he has a greater sense of the need to pay it back. You want more men at university, eliminate the need to run up huge debts. I got the good grades at school. I’ll go to university and never leave – as soon as I can afford it. Till then, I’ll work.

    3. Men can do maths. (Again, to all the girls out there who can do maths and budgets, where the hell were you when I was single? Feel free to complain, I’ll be so happy just to know you exist.) Men have a greater sense that debts need to be repaid. So they don’t take on huge debts that they can’t repay. Women think they can cry and some man will sort out all their problems for them. Especially if they have a couple of kids to hold up as ransom. Who is going to take on huge unpayable debts for a house they can’t afford? A single man or a single mother? Who’s going to end up staying at home because they can’t afford a house, and even if they do buy one, who is going to get bailed out when they get behind in the bills: the man, the woman, the single mother?

    4. Why are men staying at home playing video games? Well, what’s the point in working if you can’t even afford to buy a house. How can you get married if you can’t afford a wife? Or kids? Or a house to put them in?

I know that one out of one is not a statistic, but nine out of ten is irrelevant when you’re the one out of ten:

I watched my parents fight (not often). I decided that they didn’t intend on fighting when they got married, it just happened for some unknown reason later on. Their fights put me off marriage for life. I’d rather leave someone than fight with them. Same with having kids. You can do your best to look after them. That doesn’t mean you’ll succeed. I decided the safest way to look after kids is to not have them. Once I reached adulthood – well I’ve had to scrape by just to look after myself all my life, no way could I have afforded to look after a wife and kids as well. Or maybe I don’t truly appreciate the level of government hand-outs available. So us responsible genes are going extinct whereas the handout parasites are breeding the next generation.

I was the 5th top student in our school. The top 6 students were boys. At least 2 of us are not that good at meeting women ( though I do have a girlfriend now ). Maybe in becoming so smart we became socially mal-adjusted. Or maybe we look too weak or ugly. Either way, the class clowns, the druggies, the average kids, the dropouts – they seem to have no shortage of women. If being smart ain’t sexy then smart ain’t going to survive.

Despite top grades at school, and recognition as a hard worker at my part time job that I worked after school hours, I still managed to rack up 18 months unemployment and 7 years on minimum wages in my twenties. Guess those top school grades aren’t that relevant in the real world after all. If being smart doesn’t pay the bills then smart won’t survive.

( I was lucky I got in before the boom but looking at everyone else ) …
Who can afford a house? The minimum wage here is 500 bucks per week. The minimum rent around $300 per week. The minimum repayments if you buy the cheapest house in the cheapest suburb is 400 bucks per week. In the first year that, as an average wage earner, I earnt 40 grand, the average price of houses increased by over 40 grand (from 400k to 450k) – how /why did anyone save up for a house that year? Back when tradies were earning $840 for a week’s work, the repayments on an average house were $640 per week. Factor in food, transport and all the other bills, I guess the tradies all had to buy below average houses, or go halves with their wife… ( Google Elizabeth Warren and the coming collapse of the middle class and you can learn all about double income families buying houses. ) … or all the idiots are given money from corrupt banks, to buy houses they can’t afford, thus driving up prices so high that anyone who can write a budget realizes they can’t afford to buy a house – and ends up bumming at home with mum while the idiots are idolized as “responsible home owners” … until the banks repossess the house.

    • AlRussell

OK. Sorry to have to tell you this, but you’re hanging out with stupid,
shallow women. One way to correct this might be to examine your priorities when
it comes to the women you choose to spend time with. Are you choosing your
female companions based upon how their rear ends look in tight jeans or whether
or not they are capable, decent people? These things aren’t necessarily
mutually exclusive, but putting too much value on the former will net you a
disproportionate number of empty headed tools regardless of gender. There are
more than enough useless men out there to create parity. Here’s another tip,
smart women hang together. Skanks also tend to travel in flocks. Find one
decent woman and she’s likely to have other, equally decent friends. Now that
we have that established, I’m going to address a few of your bullet points.

      1. Most women I know don’t care much for sports. I’m actually the exception
there, but I still think it’s absurd to pay these guys such a massive wage
considering their contribution to society is so small. Ask 10 random women on
the street who should be paid more, their kid’s teacher or RG3 and see what
they say. Now ask 10 men. The answer will be very enlightening for you, I
suspect most women will likely just give you a blank stare, while the men will
launch into either superlatives or outright violence depending on their team

      2. In Britain, only 8% of single parents are fathers and out of those, 12% are
widowers, so they’re only raising their kids alone because the mothers died,
not because they abandoned their children. In America 73% of single parents are
Mothers. One of the greatest responsibilities an adult can have is the care of
their offspring. In short, men are most definitely NOT intrinsically more
responsible as a whole than women.

      3. See number 2. Single mothers are not usually single mothers by
choice. “Bailing them out” should be the responsibility of the
absentee men who knocked them up in the first place. As far as those
“maths” go, most mothers I know are also responsible for budgeting
the household finances. My husband would cry if I made him do the taxes one

      4. Why are men staying home playing video games? Not all men do. The world
is still turning and there are still good men out there drudging away at jobs
they don’t really like because they care about their responsibilities. Those
who waste their time playing video games all day do so because they are losers
who prefer an easily digested two dimensional world to one that requires then
to show initiative and take responsibility. Of course, these same guys want to
dissect the issue and come up with a pseudo-psychological “syndrome”
      to excuse their own uselessness.

      • PT

Great to hear your side of the story. Thankyou.

        • AlRussell

          Anytime, my friend.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Ocelot/713275849 Jean Ocelot

I have to admit that as an early middle-aged obsolete unemployable engineer bachelor (yes, I did get one of the supposedly desirable STEM degrees – only to become unemployable as the American employer has decided to no longer hire expensive Americans, and instead hire foreigners that are so poor that they defecate on the river bank), I just don’t have the get up and go to work some cr@p job – nor “man up” and marry some single mommy. I’d rather just take it easy and travel the world as an English teacher, taking full use of the American welfare state system.

When I was a younger lad, I was able to get a good job and buy an inexpensive house with a low downpayment; I couldn’t do that nowadays. I guess I could try and get a master’s degree in something really hot like Data Science, but would I get work? Maybe not, and thus I don’t feel it is worth the time, effort and student loan debt to find out.

And as for dating, the central fact is that women have lost their sexual modesty, making it much easier for men to “not buy the cow” – something that sounds like a good choice if that cow has given away a lot of such free samples – and which makes that cow less interested in and/or even able to being a true lifetime partner for a man that won’t suddenly feel like divorcing her man just because she doesn’t “feel it” anymore (i.e., wives initiate divorce far more than husbands.) And who the hell wants to marry a woman who has spawned something from some other man’s seed?

        • Mr. E

That’s the result of Feminism for ya.

      • Susan Nercher

        1. Athletes get paid a lot because they bring in a lot of money. The same goes for celebrity actors and singers. If you bring in a lot of money, you should be entitled to reasonable compensation. Teachers don’t bring in a lot of money. Yes, there jobs are extremely important and more so than the jobs of athletes and performing artists but there is no money to pay them. Do you want your taxes to go up in order to pay a teacher $300,000 a year? Most people can’t afford that.

        2. Yes, one of the greatest responsibilities an adult can have is the care of her/his offspring. But guess what……many women aren’t doing a good job of that. Supporting your child with state welfare is irresponsible. Having a kid with a loser is irresponsible. Divorcing the father of your children because you are bored and frustrated only to plunge the kids into poverty is irresponsible. Raising kids to become criminals is irresponsible.

The DHHS data shows that of children abused by one parent between 2001 and 2006, 70.6% were abused by their mothers, whereas only 29.4% were abused by their fathers.

And of children who died at the hands of one parent between 2001 and 2006, 70.8% were killed by their mothers, whereas only 29.2% were killed by their fathers.

Furthermore, contrary to media portrayals that leave the viewer with the impression that only girls are ever harmed, boys constituted fully 60% of child fatalities. (Table 4-3, p. 71, Child Maltreatment 2006,http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm06/cm06.pdf, reports that 675 boys died in 2006 as compared to 454 girls).

The bottom line is that there is a large body of literature showing that children of single mothers are more likely to commit crimes than children who grow up with their married parents. This is true not just in the United States, but wherever the issue has been researched.

        3. Many single mothers are single mothers by choice. Having sex with a loser is a choice. Having a child when you can’t pay your bills is a choice. Women can have abortions or give the children up for adoption. They are not required to give birth and keep the children. Also, they can practice better birth control. Furthermore, women are more likely to file for divorce and it’s not because of abuse, substance-abuse or adultery on the part of the spouse. It’s usually because the woman is bored or frustrated with her husband. Women, especially young women, are hit hardest by chlamydia. Studies have found that chlamydia is more common among young women than young men, and the long-term consequences of untreated disease are much more severe for women. The chlamydia case rate per 100,000 population for females in 2005 was more than three times higher than for males (496.5 vs. 161.1).

        4. Men are playing video games because it is easier than marrying a woman who may have an STD and who will eventually leave him and take the kids along with a good part of his assets. It seems many women like to shame men who play video games and who refuse to marry because they would rather blame the men rather than their own uselessness as decent partners and mothers.

  • PT

If men weren’t desperate for sex then the human race would have gone extinct before it began. Survival is hard work. Providing for a whole family is much harder again.

When economists tell us that a man is only worth as little as his boss can get away with paying him, and that little can’t even buy a house, let alone a wife and kids, well the suicide rate corrects the problem, doesn’t it? Less workers = scarce workers = more valuable workers left over? Of course, it also means less customers …

  • mpyre

why? radical feminism that basicly sums up the sexes this way: Women…Good. Men…Bad.

right it’s the boys running around like sex crazed idiots….how about the sexed up 11teen girls wearing thongs, watching the cardashans, tongue rings and painting their asses in lulu’s this is not just a male issue the girls are just as much to blame…our kids are equally lost it’s not just a male issue

  • Mr. E

This is Feminism in action. What did you EXPECT would happen?

  • James Nunya

Um, when your focus was on women/girls for the past 40+ years what did you expect would happen? The problem with boys is that they’ve been abandoned by society and aren’t being raised to do anything. There’s no push for boys to achieve, hell we hand out out trophies simply because people show up. There’s no motivation to actually do anything. So, of course, they’re falling. Society has let them go.

By pinpointing specifics–we lose track on how the rest of the chain was connected by other links.
Problems are on the rise, and stats will keep on growing; pointing-the-finger will turn into fists-at-each-other.
If we only focus on these problems then we give in to its progression of destruction.
But if we strain our eyes to a solution (no matter how small) then we’ve planted “HOPE” into the lives of hurting ‘people’.

Let us bring Hope back to restore this generation.
