A friend of mine lost his General Manager job at a Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge dealership that was closed.

He has been unable to find work (he blames his age) and has been just hanging on. He has a son that just started college this Fall and another graduating high school in the Spring. He told me the other day over beer that the mortgage company seems to be unwilling or unable to take any action on his past-due mortgage. All of his credit card rates have gone up. He just decided to say F-it! and he is maxing all of his cards this Christmas in a last hurrah, come what may!

I wonder how many other people are doing the same thing this year? I wonder how many people are believing the govt and media propaganda about the recovery and are spending money because they believe things are getting better and so they won’t lose their job or their home next year?

I have another friend whose son-in-law just lost his job. The guy was in what was supposed to be a strong industry (Energy). He is 28 years old, smart, and a very good worker. He was very popular at work, including with his supervisors. He had received several raises and promotions. Last year he and his wife bought a house. Three weeks ago (two weeks before he was laid-off) he bought a new Mustang in anticipation of the next promised raise. His wife doesn’t make enough to pay the bills and when their savings runs out, if he hasn’t found a job they are in big trouble. He cannot collect unemployment because he was listed as a private contractor. Their family is financially strapped right now (two others out of work) and cannot help much. This is the real world. This is main street! This is what Wall Street is ignoring and it WILL NOT go away. There will have to be a reckoning.
