A new bill introduced in the Arizona House would generally bar abortions starting at 20 weeks of pregnancy.


The bill introduced late Monday by Phoenix Republican Rep. Kimberly Yee and supported by the conservative Center for Arizona Policy would impose the ban except in cases involving medical emergencies.

It says reasons for the ban include concerns that fetuses at that stage can feel pain and that women have higher health risks from later abortions.

Similar bans have been approved in a handful of other states, starting with Nebraska in 2010.
