Apocalyptic Scenes: Singapore Air Pollution Hits Record, People Warned To Stay Indoors

Singapore’s Haze Hits Hazardous Levels

Singapore Air Pollution Hits Record

SINGAPORE–Smog in Singapore worsened to a record “hazardous” level Thursday, as smoke from fires in neighboring Indonesia billowed into the island state’s worst-ever air-pollution crisis.

According to Singapore’s National Environment Agency, the city’s three-hour Pollutant Standards Index rose to an all-time high of 371 at 1 p.m. local time (0500 GMT) Thursday, surpassing the official “hazardous” designation of 301 or higher. The index had shown readings between 137 and 299 from 6 a.m. to midday, indicating “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” conditions.

AFP – Fast-food deliveries have been cancelled, the army has suspended field training and even Singapore’s top marathon runner has retreated as residents try to protect themselves from the smog that has descended on the city-state.

In Singapore’s worst environmental crisis in more than a decade, the skyscrapers lining the Marina Bay financial district were shrouded by thick smoke Thursday as raging forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia’s Sumatra island pushed air pollution levels to an all-time high.

Marathon runner Mok Ying Ren said the haze had forced him to run indoors on a gym treadmill as “it is just too crazy to run outdoors in these conditions”.

People warned to stay indoors

SINGAPORE—Singapore urged people to remain indoors amid unprecedented levels of air pollution Thursday as a smoky haze wrought by forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia worsened dramatically. Nearby Malaysia closed 200 schools and banned open burning in some areas.
