They are advanced and forward looking and probably plan to continue to be winners as technology continues to develop. Apple also has tended to be quite good at forecasting the market, including weathering storms as well as riding the wave of boom times.

Canceling Expo could indicate they see such a significant downturn they see it prudent to cancel any expenditure that may not be beneficial, as such events give a boost to demand in boom times but could be a waste of money when the economy is bust, in hard times. They may be ready to batten down the hatches for the approaching storm of economic collapse, to help enable them to survive and to be ready for when things one day improve. Time scale could be in years, or even decades if the dollar printing machines are overloaded, but they could be preparing for such things, so that whilst some of their competitors may be overwhelmed by the meltdown, they will work to maintain current products and markets the best they can, but possibly cut back on the fast pace of development they have led during boom times.

Possibly people will be happy with their existing ipods and macs, although iphone may be hit by people having to cut down expenditure on mobile phones, so its consolidation. When people are better off, maybe in a few years time, hopefully before the end of the next decade, then time for innovation and development again, in the meantime people who already have ipods will get pleasure they didn’t get in the first Great Depression from listening to their ipods through the next Great Depression.
