As someone who lives in Greece I am not surprised at all by the news….and even less surprised that 43% oppose reform.

The news states that there are 1500 people in Athens that earn more than 100k€ a year…thats a joke. I live on an island and while tax returns fall year on year and any Greek will tell you business is bad they all have massive houses, paid for, and brand new Mercs and BMW’s. When a taxi license costs 125.000 to 250.000€ and you see the number of taxis you know someone is lying about the wealth of the people.

The whole of Greek society is corrupt from top to bottom, when you can pay 300€ a year tax in advance and earn as much as you like because it is cash - very little electronic transactions here - then it is no wonder the economy is dead in the water.

Now the tourist season is over the random police stops are back and at 200€ a time, spot fine or the threat of more in court, straight into the pocket of the police officer - they need the cash for Christmas…its a joke

The country is run by a dozen or so extended families worth billions and nothing happens unless they give it the go ahead…thats without the ten of billions in cash the Orthodox church sucks out of the system and they pay zero tax on.

Thats before we even touch on the mafia protection rackets, drugs, people smuggling in the main centers that accounts for up to 20% of the economy in some areas

Yes Greece has problems, but 90% of those problems are the Greeks themselves.

On the plus side the weather is good :-)
