Al Nusrah Front, Planned for “terrorist designation” by US, takes control of Chemical Weapons Base
The Sheikh Suleiman base, or Base 111, fell to the Al Nusrah Front and “several Islamist rebel battalions linked to it,” a representative of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.
“Many of the fighters were from other Arab countries and Central Asia,” AFP said
Some of the fighters who took the base are non-Syrian. One of the leaders involved in the battle to take the base identified himself to AFP as Abu Talha and said he was from Uzbekistan. Other foreign fighters said, “We are all mujahedeens and muhajireens.”
The Sheikh Suleiman base is rumored to be involved in the Assad regime’s chemical weapons program. The base “contained a clandestine scientific research whose purpose was unknown even to the rank and file,” AFP reported in late November, based on a claim from a soldier who defected.
The fall of the Sheikh Suleiman base to jihadist forces took place just days after the supposedly secular rebels established a joint military command that is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and individuals linked to the various Salafist-jihadist groups.
Al Qaeda may have chemical weapons, Spain’s counter-terror chief warns:
Looks like Al Nusrah Front and Al Qaeda are old buddies.
Suicide attacks and assaults by the al Qaeda-backed Al Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant are becoming all too common in Syria. The Al Nusrah Front has claimed credit for yet another attack, this time against a Syrian military outpost in the city of Al Qusayr in Homs province.
The Al Nusrah Front has by far taken the lead among the jihadist groups in executing suicide and other complex attacks against the Syrian military. The terror group has now claimed credit for 42 of the 51 suicide attacks that have taken place in Syria in the past 12 months.
The US government is contemplating adding the Al Nusrah Front to the list of global terrorist groups, but some observers in Washington fear that designation would harm the overall insurgency.
Looks like Al Nusrah Front also connected with Chechen rebels.
This could change Russia’s mind on intervention.
Chechen connection with Al Nusrah Front in Syria is growing: Eyes on Turkey and concern in Russia
Obama Inc. have declared that Assad’s use of chemical weapons against the Islamic rebels in Syria would constitute a “red line” that would make intervention mandatory. Meanwhile Obama’s people are training the Syrian Islamist rebels to secure Syrian WMDs.
What that really means is training Muslim Brotherhood affiliated militias over Al Qaeda affiliated militias. Setting aside all the issues with the Muslim Brotherhood, the practical difference between the two is often slight. Both rely on bands of fighters under commanders who have been known to shift their loyalties around. Or to put it another way, imagine counting on a biker gang to secure a bank vault and a few ICBMs. That’s the insane policy here.
