Solar storms rising in May: the Earth is at risk blackout

Solar activity will grow significantly in the current month, exactly towards the end of May. They are the experts of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) to disclose, which provide that the electromagnetic waves released may interfere with the electronic systems.
The particles ejected by the sun can produce powerful magnetic storms, which should be to adversely affect the operation of electronic appliances. Astrophysicist Mauro Messerotti, said: “Anomalies, interference, power outages occur at this particular juncture, we have observed more than once. Like when in the north of Canada, a few years ago, due to a solar storm went haywire the entire electrical system of different cities. ”
The subject was addressed at the XVII International Space Conference, which opened its doors yesterday in Rome. The scientists who attended the conference, coming from twenty-one countries, discussed the effects of solar activity, focusing their attention mainly on the possible health risks. The debate among the experts has revealed that in the month of May, the Sun will record a peak of activity following the eruptions recorded in the first days of the month of May. They are highlighted, in particular, solar storms, swarms of flying particles away from our star and able to reach the Earth. There have been, as well, of magnetic storms capable of disturbing in no small way some human technologies.
So, to be at risk there are telecommunications, which may be subject to interference, the continuity of energy, which suggest the possible power cuts, like that happened years ago in Canada. Also scheduled flights may be disrupted, which could be forced to amend and extend their course to avoid the poles and the radiation is concentrated in those areas at these times. The scientist Messerotti, explained: “In the meantime we have to say that just highlight the month of May is the last solar cycle. We still know very little, we have no concrete evidence. In short, a comprehensive model of our star still is not there. We study the “case” for only 300 years, more or less thirty solar cycles on an object older than 5 billion years. The effects on our planet have their own in the ascending phase of the phenomenon. ”

Solar ‘superstorm’ set to strike Earth – and we’ll only have a 30 MINUTE warning

  • Experts warn that superstorm is ‘inevitable’ and call for UK to be prepared
  • They want a quango to lead government strategy for coping with the blast
  • It could trigger black-outs, knock out satellites and disrupt aircraft and ships
  • The last superstorm was known as the Carrington event and was in 1859

The world will have a 30 minute warning when a once-in-a-century solar ‘superstorm’ strikes the Earth knocking out major communications, scientists revealed.

Superstorms occur every 200 years, with the last storm striking in 1859, and scientists are preparing for the event which could paralyze communications networks including GPS and mobile phones.

The news comes as it is revealed a new body of space experts is needed to help protect Britain from the storm. The Royal Academy of Engineering has said that the massive radiation blast is inevitable and that the Government should set up a UK Space Weather Board.
