Dubai is a fake. The whole Dubai super life is fake.

I was there only once, only once for a week, but all smelled fake, apart from the Gold Souk, and the old port.

The developers tried to build an American City…..they had all the hotels, chain restaurants, but none of them were INDEPENDENTLY OWNED. They didn’t understand that, a hard working person, husband and wife, or a small team, is what built the American dream.

The developers in Dubai, thought they could BUY western capitalism……..its sad but true……
They attract sports stars with free hotels, free everything, plus plus.

The whole Dubai success story is a fake. Now everyone can see it, I am sad but happy the truth is out.

Most major US Architecture firms in Chicago, NY, California are actively engaged in projects in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Since there is virtually NO development going on in the US right now (except for some Institutional and Medical), the big firms are relying upon international contracts in China and the Middle East.

While Architecture and Engineering may not be the concern of most in the overall scheme of the US ecomony, they are certainly canary in the coal mine professions, and suffer massive losses of talent during these periods. I think that everyone is in agreement that the world needs more creative types and less paper pushers, and the catalysmic events of recent memory are driving the creative people out, and into jobs as waiters and bartenders.

Dubai will be a big deal for the SOM’s, KPF’s, Jacobs’, Callison’s, Smith Gill’s of America, as those institutions are depending on a huge load of work from the Middle East.
