What makes food prices jump? My guess is crude oil:

Currency devaluation and drought are some of the other reasons why food prices are rising. Much of the US is in a drought. Suburban development in China and India is consuming good farmland and water away from food production. Unless the drought in the US breaks this spring (unlikely) food prices will probably make an new high in 2013.
