The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency says the body will send inspectors to Fukushima to look into the leakage of radiation-contaminated water at the crippled nuclear plant.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano touched on the problem in a speech at a regular board meeting in Vienna on Monday.
Amano said the water leak at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is an urgent and pressing issue.
The agency chief said it will send a team of inspectors to Fukushima this fall to support the Japanese government.
The agency’s experts visited Fukushima in April to inspect the decommissioning process at the plant.
In the speech, Amano praised the countermeasures announced by the Japan earlier this month as an important step forward.
Ambassador Toshiro Ozawa of Japan’s diplomatic mission explained the measures that are, and will be taken against the contaminated water problem.
Ozawa asked for understanding, stressing that Japan will disclose information and cooperate with the IAEA and international community.
The Japanese ambassador said he will also provide details at the IAEA’s annual general meeting to clear up international concerns over the problem.
