Interesting thing happened to me yesterday, I found a job… sort of.

After giving up on my job search I started doing small software “gigs” through Craigslist (not exactly the path to riches). Last week I redesigned a woman’s site and met her husband at a local coffee shop to discuss payment. He said he thought he had another project for me, and I should meet him at his office.

Turns out he is President and CEO of a chip design company. Yesterday I went there. The lobby had a desk for a receptionist but it was empty, so I had to call him to come down and let me in. It was a very large building, but we walked passed dozens of empty desks and cubes on the way to his office in the corner. He explained that business had been slow and he had to let some people go. We went over the basics for the software tool he wanted to build, and he told me he didn’t have a lot money for this project, but he would make it worth my time and pay me cash.

All the searching and hostile interviews I endured let to nothing, and here is a guy running a large company offering me cash like an immigrant nanny. Of course I agreed. Not much money but I can keep my unemployment. Flexible hours, so I can watch the kids while my wife is at school.

It will be a long time before I go back to a traditional job search. There seems to be lot’s of work available if you are willing to work under the table. Interesting… how much of this do you think I going on?
