Internet bills could stifle free speech, diversity of opinion


We were all taught in civics and government classes that we could only achieve enlightenment through the free, open and dispassionate exchange of ideas and opinions. By this practice, truth will eventually win out over falsehood, we learned.

Extending this maxim to freedom of the press, American essayist E.B. White said it best: “The press in our free country is reliable and useful not because of its good character but because of its great diversity. As long as there are many owners, each pursuing his own brand of truth, we the people have the opportunity to arrive at the truth and dwell in the light.”

There are currently two bills in Congress — one on the Senate side and one in the House — that would curtail these rights. Anything that limits our freedoms of speech and press must necessarily be examined with a hypercritical eye and a healthy dose of skepticism…
