I’ve had nothing but trouble closing my Bank of America accounts with these bastards, but I finally managed to get them closed, until they re-opened them again without my permission.
They threatened me that if any automatic withdrawl attempt happened by our cellular phone company, cable company, etc, it would trigger an overdraft fee on the account. Well, we couldn’t get all the auto withdrawls killed off in time; but to our surprise we got a postcard from BAC the very next day, on each of the 3 ocassions, stating a withdrawl had been attempted, they refused it and there was a $0 charge for it. We were happily surprised, until my wife’s automatic DEPOSIT attempted to put money into the account. Guess what happened?!? They automatically accepted the money, re-opened the account, and we didn’t get a postcard alerting us to the deposit.
I called up the branch a week after my wife’s employer couldn’t find the money and told us to go talk to BAC. I called up the branch, explained the situation, told her I wanted to close the account and get my money out. She said she was busy with a customer and would call me back. I called again an hour later and got the same story. I called another hour later and she told me the same thing, I told her I’d be in her lobby in 5 minutes so she’d have to deal with me after that customer.
I went to the branch and sure enough, my wife’s paycheck was sitting in the BAC account we had closed a week earlier and they never bothered to tell us about it. The BAC employee then went through the whole BS process of closing out our account, again, and picked the reason “Unable to maintain minimum balance” as the reason code for our cancellation. I asked her why she picked it and she said it didn’t matter, no one looks at it, and when I asked her if no one looks at the reason codes, why did she scroll down the list to pick that one instead of the first one in the list and she seemed baffled.
She gave me my receipt and I went to the teller for the money. The teller then told me she couldn’t give me it in cash because her drawer didn’t have enough and that I could only get a cashiers check. I told her no, I wanted cash. She insisted on giving me a bank check and I insisted I wasn’t leaving and she better get my cash instead. She gave up on resisting my simple request, took the money out of her drawer and I ended up closing my BAC accounts for the second time in a week.
The only thing that reasonable people can do to them is vote with your feet. I voted.

you’re dumb. it was your fault for not being able to manage your outgoing and incoming finances properly.
Corey, you’re an *sshole and f*ck Bank of America for assuming they could re-open someone’s account without their permission. Even if I can’t manage my finances well that does not give them the right to f*ck with my sh*t, you judgemental f*ck.
@George Sounds like a case of the pot calling out the kettle for the color of his tin.
When something bad happens to someone and that bad thing happens to be their own fault, often they will try to place the blame on another person or another factor out of their control that caused said bad thing to happen. This is something a lot of people do, some are truly ignorant and are completely void of self awareness, and the rest are consciously attempting to protect their ego. In your story you blatantly admit that you did not close your account properly because you didn’t cancel all of your recurring payments and deposits to the account, yet you somehow mysteriously shift the blame to the bank. I mean, you didn’t even try to spin it a little to shift the blame to the bank, you just told a truthful story that obviously showed you being the one at fault and concluded the bank is actually at fault. Truly mind blowing stuff.
You are in the former group of people that engage in this behavior, or you wouldn’t have made it so obvious in your story that everything was your own fault. Seriously, a person with even the slightest spec of self awareness, even if they had gotten to the point of typing this story up, would have read over it and said, “Oh shit, I’m a moron. If I post this, everyone will know how ridiculous, immature, and full of bullshit I am.”
Please grow up and stop filling the world with your biased, subjective, and thoughtless crap.
And I completely side with the 99%, I’m all for cancelling bank accounts and protesting anything you disagree with. But I’m sick of these douchebags with their camera phones at the protests who point their camera at a police officers, who are gently handcuffing someone, and scream, “POLICE BRUTALITY!” They’re trying to spread propaganda, though I think most of them are aware that they are full of shit. You on the other hand seem completely oblivious to it.
But hey, I’m just as much of an idiot for thinking you may actually achieve some level of self awareness from reading this post.
Can’t believe the comments. I thought the article was informative. You can learn from others mistakes. Thanks for the information. You are not the first to have these problems.
This is within the BofA terms of agreement. As a BofA customer, I read through them.
“Sometimes after an account is closed, we receive a deposit for credit to the account or a check or other item for payment from the account. If this happens, we may at our option and without any liability to you: either return the deposit, check or other item; or we may reopen the account and accept the deposit, check or other item for you, even if this overdraws your account and causes you to incur overdraft fees.”

Which was effective August 12th. You should have read through it before closing your account.
