What would a middle class father do to feed his 3 kids rather than watch them starve to death? It boils down to primal instinct - we call it the 4 Fs - Fleeing, fighting, feeding, and mating. Trust me, the survival instinct is the most powerful (mortal) force you will ever encounter … If - and notice i said IF - the store shelves are emptied in a panic, where will the re-supply come from? This is not some localized disaster like a hurricane - this is national - no area will be untouched. IF it happens, people WILL starve to death … primarily in the urban areas. Is this kind of scenario “likely”? honestly, i don’t know how it will play out as there are just too many variables but the question to ask is if a scenario like this is “possible” and the answer to that is “yes, it is possible”. the “possibility” that you consider is no different from investing in the market or playing Texas Holdem - you consider a number of variables - odds ratios, pot odds, P/E ratios, uncapitalized debt, etc and make a “best guess” as to what will happen in the future. The future possibility of societal or economic collapse is the same thing - factor in the variables and make a “best guess”. again, people and society are my areas so i feel much more comfortable making a “best guess” in the case of social psychology rather than the stock market. the bottom line is that if i wasn’t worried, i wouldn’t have the guns/ammo/food/water supplies (which are substantial) that i have developed as resources over the last year - they just quantify how i feel about the “possibility” of either social/economic collapse and/or inflation/hyperinflation. my supplies are nothing more than “tangible” futures - some people buy paper gold/paper oil/etc, i buy sugar/flour/ammo/etc … no difference really, i just take physical delivery of my investments …
