As the state budgets reset, one way states will balance the budgets is by reducing the state payrolls

states enter a new budget year July 1, and most legislators have been working through this issue last month.

HONOLULU -The state is delivering written layoff notices to about 1,100 state employees who were previously notified that their positions could be eliminated because of the budget crunch.

IL - Gov. Pat Quinn has directed state agencies to avoid spending up to 25 percent of that amount. That alone, AFSCME estimates, could result in 9,000 layoffs.
Tuesday Quinn announced a plan to lay off more than 26000 state workers, to help close the state’s roughly eleven billion dollar budget deficit.

Some Arizona State University employees who are being laid off will also be subjected to a 15-day furlough, reports The Arizona Republic.
The AZ state university, which is eliminating up to 550 positions through attrition and layoffs in response to a state budget crisis, has ordered all of its 12,000 employees to take up to 15 days of unpaid leave by June 30.

Pennsylvania is poised to lay off 800 state employees because of proposed spending cuts, Gov. Ed Rendell said today.
Pink slips will go out once he and the Legislature agree on a 2009-10 budget. Rendell said he regrets the layoffs, but couldn’t avoid them because labor unions have resisted rolling furloughs as an alternative.

Governor David Paterson is moving forward with a plan to lay off nearly 9,000 state workers.
