IT’S OFFICIAL: President Donald Trump asks Congress to probe “potentially politically motivated investigations” during the 2016 campaign.
Washington (AFP) – President Donald Trump is asking Congress to probe “potentially politically motivated investigations” during the 2016 campaign, the White House said Sunday.
The announcement came one day after Trump took to Twitter to accuse his predecessor Barack Obama of tapping his phones ahead of the November election, without providing evidence of the explosive charge.
An Obama spokesman has denied Trump’s accusation as “simply false.”
In his statement, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer referred to unspecified reports of “potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election” as “very troubling.”
“President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016,” Spicer said.

  1. If a FISA judge allowed a wiretap (if indeed one even occurred) it would most likely be of incoming calls from Russians into Trump tower, an entirely different matter.
    Secondly, the judge or judges in this case would be the ones held to responsibility because they have the final power to say yea or nay on any wiretap. Trump has attacked judges before (judge Curiel, 9th Circuit recently, etc) but has deflected attention towards attacking Obama as a diversionary attempt and also because Trump attacking FISA for example would not sit well at all with many Republicans on the hill and automatically split support for Trump among those Republicans.
    Third, expanded power for the NSA does not mean that Obama just pulls a lever and controls what the NSA does with that power, so it would again come down to the NSA being the ones who made any decision to wiretap (if indeed they did make this “call” to authorize a tap.
