One of the most controversial leaders in the world, Rodrigo Duterte president of Philippines, says he killed criminals in a bid to show police officers that “If I can do it, why can’t you?”
Duterte bragged he personally killed suspected criminals when he was mayor of his home city of Davao when he was cruising the streets on his motorcycle “looking for trouble”. The cruel president confessed his acts in a speech on Monday night when he was discussing his campaign to eradicate illegal drugs. Since he became president on June 30, 2016, more than 5000 people were killed.
During his speech on the national television, he said: “In Davao, I used to do it personally. Just to show to the guys [police officers] that if I can do it, why can’t you. And I’d go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble also. I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill.”
It’s important to mention that previously, he both acknowledged and denied his involvement in Davao death squads. It seems like he just can’t make up his mind, right?
Since his election, police have reported killing 2,086 people in anti-drug operations. More than 3,000 others have been killed in unexplained circumstances.
It’s not uncommon for masked assailants to break into homes and kill people who have been tagged as drug traffickers or drug users. Human rights groups have warned of a breakdown in the rule of law with police and hired assassins operating with impunity.
