Today, the Health Dept. was giving free H1N1 flu vaccines to all students who brought in a signed permission form from their parents at my daughter’s public middle school (Florida). I considered it, did some research, and finally decided against it. Most students who get this vaccine will no doubt be fine. However, my research revealed that a known side effect of this vaccine (printed right on the label) is Guillain-Barre syndrome, which causes paralysis and death. (If you google H1N1 vaccine and Guillain-Barre, you’ll find that there are a few media stories already about recent incidences of this side effect.)

The CDC has put together a brand new reporting system website for incidences of side effects associated with this vaccine, which is being given for free in certain public schools across the nation starting today, thanks to Obama’s declaration of H1N1 as a national health emergency this weekend. The massive clinical trial is going on as of today in our schools, though few people realize that they are signing their son or daughter up for a clinical trial.

Many have said on this site that the vaccine is not safe. But how many realize that our children are effectively providing clinical trial results?

If you are trying to make a decision whether or not to have your child vaccinated under this new program, consider whether your child has ever had an undiagnosed allergy. In my case, my daughter has had TWO anaphylactic reactions to something in the past (we don’t know what) that caused a high fever, difficulty breathing, and hives that broke out all over her body. That is enough to tell me, don’t take a chance with this vaccine with my kids.
