“Delinquent Buncombe taxpayers to be listed
FEBRUARY 6, 2010
ASHEVILLE — Delinquent taxpayers can expect to see their names in print come March 21 if they don’t pay up.
…..Buncombe County Tax Collector Gary Roberts asked county commissioners to approve the annual advertisement in the Asheville Citizen-Times at their meeting Tuesday, as an incentive for more to pay their tax levies.
…..Roberts will send out letters to 12,363 taxpayers with past due bills totaling about $11.6 million. About half of those will pay up in the next few weeks, but Roberts estimated that up to 6,500 names will make the list.
…..In 2009, about 6,000 delinquents were listed, compared to 5,200 names in 2008. “All that’s due to the bad economy,” Roberts said.”

I think he is being optimistic with his percentage, but the bottom line is that our fairly affluent county has over 1,000 more behind on taxes at optimistic estimate than two years ago - a minimum 20% increase. Not good.
