Switzerland’s cherished banking secrecy is under threat. In the ongoing battle against tax evasion, EU finance ministers have agreed to put pressure on the non-member nation to share its banking data with the Union. Investor Jim Rogers told RT that instead of trying to crack tax havens, EU leaders should address the real problems – like their own unchecked spending habits.
CHESTER, Pa., (CBS) – It’s a story you saw first on 3 – A vicious beating inside a local high school and a cell phone camera captured it all.
On Wednesday, police arrested five students they say were involved in the fight at Chester High School. Police say even more arrests could be coming.

In his weekly address filmed this time in Mexico City, President Obama touted his efforts to reform the immigration system. He made sure to say the “bill is a compromise,” and included this gaffe, “It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally.”
The president said he brought up the topic because it “affects both our countries.”

Barack Obama absolutely slayed at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Saturday evening.
Early in his address to attendees, he took on CNN saying, “I admire their commitment to cover all sides of the story just in case one of them happens to be accurate” (video follows with transcript and commentary):
BARACK OBAMA: And of course, the White House press corps is here. I know CNN has taken some knocks lately, [...]

Liver disease is now the fifth biggest killer in the UK — with the number of people dying from it rising by 20 per cent over the past decade. However, there are often no warning signs until it is far advanced, so many of us could have the potentially fatal condition without even realising it.
Indeed, when the British Liver Trust recently offered members of the public on-the-spot screening, one in [...]
The following warning was posted on Hestilow’s Facebook page:
I fully intend to address this in far greater detail within days, but ask yourself, with all the law enforcement available in the United States, who the DHS is preparing to declare war on inside the U.S.?
With the massive purchases of almost 3,000 new armored vehicles (MRAPs) and 1.6 BILLION rounds of ammunition, with associated weapons, who in the U.S. do they [...]
From The Big Picture:
I mentioned last week that bullish sentiment was getting a bit frothy. After a few weeks of record highs, expectations that stock prices will continue rising had surged.
Not quite an extrapolation of recent trends into infinity, but getting there.
This morning, I wanted to address the flip side of that — Bearish sentiment (expectations that stock prices will fall in the near future). This Pessimism remains above historical [...]
Meanwhile, the fight between Democrats and Republicans over how to address the nation’s fiscal health continues even after a week of meetings between President Barack Obama and Republicans on Capitol Hill, Boehner said. The House speaker also said he “absolutely” trusts President Barack Obama — not that they don’t have their differences.
Boehner noted that the two have a good relationship and that they’re “open with each other . . . [...]

The FBI made requests for data on as many as 2,000 Google accounts last year, the Internet giant said Tuesday.
The requests were made using a controversial technique known as a ‘national security letter’ that allows the government to seek financial, phone and Internet data without a warrant.
Google is the first Internet company to reveal the federal government’s use of national security letters to secretly retrieve data on people.
Google said it [...]
Texas was its own nation before joining the United States, and many jokes have been made about some Texans still not recognizing that “other government” with which it now is affiliated.
But lawmakers there are drawing attention by considering a law that would have Texas review how it would respond should the U.S. government no longer be there to send federal tax revenue back to the state.

MCLEAN, Va. — A top official with the Federal Aviation Administration reassured the public on Wednesday that, despite the fear and paranoia of some, no armed drones will be permitted to fly in U.S. airspace.
“We currently have rules in the books that deal with releasing anything from an aircraft, period. Those rules are in place and that would prohibit weapons from being installed on a civil aircraft,” said Jim Williams, head of the FAA’s [...]

(CNN) – President Barack Obama on Monday reiterated his call for a comprehensive package of steps against gun violence as the focus on possible Senate legislation appeared to narrow to expanded background checks and limited ammunition magazines, rather than a ban on semi-automatic rifles that mimic assault weapons.
Obama took part in a discussion with Minneapolis officials before telling police officers and others that an increase in gun violence nationwide, including the [...]
“Sixteen F-16s and 200 Abrams tanks are to be given to the Egyptian government before the end of the year under a foreign aid deal signed in 2010 with then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak,” Fox News reported Tuesday.
The State Department maintained in a January 8 letter to Sen. James Inhofe (R., Okla.) that the arming of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood serves the U.S.’s “regional security interests.”
“Delaying or cancelling deliveries of the F-16 aircraft would undermine our efforts [...]
Dan Greenhaus of BTIG splashes some cold water on the idea that Washington is going to sail through the upcoming budget thicket:
Not unimportantly for stocks on Friday and in front of today’s inauguration ceremonies, Republicans emerged from their VA retreat seemingly realigned. The reporting since suggests that Republican leadership was able to convince the rank of rile that going to the mats over the debt ceiling at this point was foolish and [...]
The EU “will fail” in a doomsday meltdown and Britain will LEAVE unless its deep problems are tackled, David Cameron is set to declare.
He had to dramatically postpone today’s hard-hitting warning to European leaders in Amsterdam because of the Algeria hostage crisis.
But it emerged the landmark speech will represent the strongest attack on the EU yet made by a serving British Prime Minister.
When it comes — probably next week — [...]

by Charles Hugh Smith, Of Two Minds:
At least one reader was upset that I recently chose to write about the stock market rather than the tragedy of December 14. I chose not to address the mass murder out of respect for the families of those whose lives were taken. I did not want to exploit the tragedy in pursuit of visibility or an agenda; my thoughts were solely on the families [...]
Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday pardoned 79 convicted people, most who committed low-level drug offenses, in an act that is for common governors to perform around Christmas and New Year’s.
All of the people who received pardons had completed their sentences and had not committed any criminal activity for more than a decade. The pardons address crimes as far back as a sentence handed down in 1954 for a robbery.

Demand for gold coins in the US has soared since the presidential election, as small investors fret about the lack of action to address America’s ballooning debt.
The US Mint’s sales of American Eagles, one of the most popular gold coins, leapt 131 percent in November, hitting their highest level in more than two years. The Royal Canadian Mint also had its strongest month of sales this year.

Tobacco companies must issue public statements that address the dangers of smoking and reveal that cigarette makers lied for years about their product, says a federal judge in Washington, DC.
District Judge Gladys Kessler this week rejected claims from the tobacco companies that portions of the so-called “corrective statements” violated their First Amendment rights. The corrective statements were first ordered in 2006, when Big Tobacco lost its long court battle [...]

Whoever is inaugurated as president Jan. 20 will, in the first year of his term, face a decision that will have a greater impact on the economy than any other single call he will make: Whom to select as chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Ben S. Bernanke’s term ends Jan. 31, 2014, about a year after the president takes office; if the past is a guide, and given [...]

Obama threatens to attack Syria
US President Barack Obama has a stern warning for the country of Syria. In an address made early Monday, the commander-in-chief confirmed that he has not ruled out an offensive strike on Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
Speaking from the White House, President Obama said that if Syria is able to procure chemical or biological weapons, the United States will follow through with its threat of launching [...]
It’s hard to get politicians from different sides of the aisle to cooperate in Washington these days. Thus our surprise when we read a letter from two members of the Senate banking committee, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), asking the Ben Ben Bernanke to do something that will make Wall Street howl (h/t Politico).
From the letter (which you can download here):
