Long, long ago, in a booming bank far from Cyprus…
“WE’RE TOP of the Best Buy table again,” my manager said, “so we’re expecting A LOT of business.”
And so it proved. The bank I worked for at time saw millions pour through the door in deposits.
Our latest fixed-rate bond had just launched (we put out a [...]
Chinese authorities have hardened their line on foreign musicians, afterElton John infuriated them by dedicating a performance to outspoken artist and activist Ai Weiwei, according to industry sources. Police arrived to interview the singer shortly after he announced that the performance, which took place in Beijing last November, was dedicated “to the spirit and talent of Ai Weiwei”, according to two sources. One said officers wanted John’s manager to sign a statement [...]
Barack Obama has released a picture of him skeet shooting in an attempt to silence gun lobby critics who doubted if he had ever fired a gun in the ongoing gun control debate in Washington.
The photograph of the president doing some recreational shooting at Camp David last August was released on Friday, after Mr Obama said in an interview that he enjoyed blowing off some steam at the range.
Skeptics took [...]

FBI Memo on Muslim Brotherhood’s Six-Phase Plan to Take Over U.S.
http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/159.pdf
The source for the memo, which is censored, says that Muslim Brotherhood is in the first phase of a six-phase plan to turn the United States into an Islamic state. This phase involves peacefully embedding themselves in the U.S., specifically the government and universities. The M.B. has also “set up political action front groups with no traceable ties” to them.

President Barack Obama, along with many Democrats, likes to say that, while they may disagree with the GOP on many issues related to national security, they absolutely share their admiration and dedication to members of our armed forces. Obama, in particular, enjoys being seen visiting troops and having photos taken with members of our military. So, why is his campaign and the Democrat party suing to restrict their ability to [...]
From FT:
It is perfectly legitimate for Mr Lula to express his affection and admiration for Mr Chavez. Affects – like love – are blind and deserve respect. But it is not legitimate for Mr Lula to intervene in another country’s elections. That’s not what democrats do. And Mr Lula knows it. Or he should know it.

“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” — Arthur Schopenhauer
I’ve been seeing more and more chatter about a 1987-style stock market crash ever since Marc Faber of “the Gloom Boom and Doom Report” brought up the idea on Bloomberg last week.
The main argument is that without [...]
Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” raved about a speech President Obama made to American troops during his surprise visit to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.
“I imagine being a soldier over there — this is what you want to hear,” Matthews said, as if he was wearing military fatigues.
Matthews also likened the leadership of President Obama to that of Henry V of England.
“It was right out of Henry V actually, [...]
Yesterday, Ben Bernanke dedicated his entire first propaganda lecture to college student to the bashing of the gold standard. Of course, he has his prerogatives: he has to validate a crumbling monetary system and the legitimacy of the Fed, first to schoolchildrden and then to soon to be college grads encumbered in massive amounts of non-dischargeable student loans. While it is decidedly arguable that the gold standard may or may not have led to the first [...]
WNBC has reportedly decided not to renew the contract of longtime anchor Sue Simmons.
Simmons, 68, has been a fixture of the WNBC anchor desk for the past three decades. New York Postgossip columnist Cindy Adams reports that WNBC declined to renew Simmons’ contract, even though the station decided to give her longtime co-anchorChuck Scarborough, who is also 68, another three years.
According to Adams, Simmons was informed a year ago about WNBC’s new direction. Around the same time, WNBC brought [...]

The late media mogul Andrew Breitbart’s final column was released Sunday night on a newly redesigned website that includes all of his “Big” sites under a single umbrella.
The column, which examines Obama’s admiration for radical community organizer Saul Alinsky, is titled “The Vetting, Part 1: Obama’s Love Song to Alinsky.”
Breitbart had planned the “Vetting” Obama series before his sudden death last Thursday at age 43. He announced [...]
“I find it as cool to be an Obama supporter. Having sat with him for two years is the White House and watched him — watching him work through some very difficult things with a lot of intelligence and grace, equilibrium. I, I have great admiration for him,” Obama’s chief campaign strategist told CNN.
“The people who were participating in the campaign in 2008 weren’t involved [...]

Sometimes we wish the oil minister of former OPEC member Saudi Arabia (“we can supply any amount of oil”), Wikileaks (“Saudi Said To Have Overstated Crude Oil Reserves By 300 Billion Barrels or 40%“), and now Saudi Arabia’s very own electricity company would coordinate their story. In a little noticed comment by Abdel Salam al-Yamani, head of the Saudi Electricity Company, in Al Mashka, which so [...]
The MSM and their liberal politician friends revel in proclaiming their admiration for average Americans. But scratch a liberal, and find condescending contempt for the people they pretend to glorify.
Take Larry O’Donnell. On his MSNBC show this evening, discussing President Obama’s problems in convincing voters that the economy is on the road to recovery, O’Donnell denigrated most Americans. Declared O’Donnell: the majority of voters “don’t [...]

Productive Vs. Unproductive: Manufacturing Vs. Financialization
The Status Quo heavily rewards financialized profiteering and resource extraction while penalizing productive capital investments in manufacturing.
There is so much ideological, quasi-religious fanaticism around “free trade” (there is no such thing as “free trade,” there are only various permutations of managed trade) and “industrial policy” (every nation has one, explicit or implicit) that it [...]

It arose because for over 200 years America managed its social and economic affairs SUPERBLY relative to the rest of the world (the past oppression of Afro-Americans being the exception). Actually, in standard of living and opportunities, America was well ahead of the world already in late Colonial times.
I was raised in Central Europe under communism and remember distinctly the enormous respect and admiration that my own [...]
All eyes are on earnings as some of the biggest companies are reporting their earnings this week. Yesterday, the focus was on IBM. As IBM fell short, prices went lower in the overnight session to hit lower lows than we saw yesterday morning. The emphasis is definitely on earnings in the short term.
Today, the almighty and impenetrable Goldman Sachs reported. GS has become the symbol of a market gone foul [...]
“If another author had said this I might not pay it so much attention. Lately some have been given over to a tabloid approach to overstatement and sensational headlines to attract attention. This is a strong temptation as the blogosphere expands, similar to the development and evolution of newspapers as a popular medium in Victorian London for example.
But as you know, I have a great deal of respect and admiration [...]
