On oil prices: Tensions with Iran adding $20-$30

WASHINGTON — Tension with Iran and “uncertainty” in the region is adding a $20 or $30 premium to oil prices, pushing up gas prices for vehicle owners in the United States, President Barack Obama said.

Whether due to rising gas prices or greater eco-consciousness among consumers, U.S. fuel economy levels are at a record high.

Last month, the average fuel economy of a new car purchased in the U.S. was 23.7 miles per gallon, compared to 23.5 miles per gallon the previous month, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
