Plant official talks about shutdown
DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. —Three Mile Island experienced an automatic shutdown at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, plant officials said.
Officials said the amount of radiation released was so small it is not measurable.
Residents in the area are hearing a loud noise, which is caused from steam being released, officials said.

One of the nation’s main nuclear weapons labs has sharply underestimated the amount of radiation that could leak from the facility as a result of an earthquake, according to a federal advisory panel.
The radiation could be more than four times as intense as the Los Alamos National Laboratory predicted in a safety analysis last year, according to a recent report by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
The New Mexico [...]

Those looking for evidence of the March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan may need search no further than their next plate of sushi, Stanford University researchers report.
The researchers tested 15 Pacific bluefin tuna that had migrated from Japan to the California coast and found that the levels of radioactive cesium in these fish were 10 times higher than those found in bluefin tuna from [...]

Fukushima plant operators are now admitting that the Fukushima radiation levels emitted from the disaster exceeds almost two and a half times the initial ‘estimate’ produced by Japanese safety regulators. The announcement comes after independent researchers exposed the true amount of radiation leaked from the plant back in October of 2011. The study revealed that significantly more radioactive caesium was released into the atmosphere as a result of the Fukushima explosion than many nuclear [...]
A controversial new San Francisco law requiring retailers to post radiation information about cell phones started this month.
San Francisco controversial new law requiring cell phone retailers in the City to provide radiation information is now live.
The ordinance requires cell phone retailers to display information about the amount of radiation emanating from cell phones and to provide fact sheets to customers who ask for them.

At least one billion becquerels a day of radiation continue to leak from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant after the March earthquake and tsunami.
Experts say that the total amount of radiation leaked will exceed amounts released from Chernobyl, making Fukushima the worst nuclear disaster in history.
Al Jazeera’s Steve Chao reports from the Japanese capital of Tokyo.
Well, a Becquerel is a really small amount of radiation – 1 decay per second. 3 Becquerel is a very low level.
The trick here is that what matters for health is the total radiation load (rad, rem, Sieverts are units). To convert that you need to know how long the exposure lasts and how long the radioactive iodine atoms are in the thyroid.
One thing to keep in [...]
The app, previously praised by Apple for its clever engineering and creative design, is reported to have been rejected by Steve Jobs himself. Israeli developer, Tawkon, submitted the app on multiple occasions to the App Store, only to have repeated denials. An email from Steve Jobs gave a short, two-word explination as to why the app wouldn’t see approval, “No interest.”
The email from Tawkon CEO Gil [...]
Yesterday we reported that TV news crews were on the move due to fears of radiation exposure. Today we saw the first example of why those moves were made.
On “Today” this morning, NBC News anchor Lester Holt revealed that he and his crew tested positive for small traces of radiation after returning to his hotel from spending time in the field.
Luckily, as Holt explains, the amount of radiation [...]

One important distinction is that receiving enough ionizing radiation, whether in the form of alpha, beta, or gamma particles, or in the form of X-rays or other electromagetic irradiance, to become severely ill or worse, is a very difficult thing to do.
Ingesting a contaminant, such as a microscopic particle of plutonium, on the other hand, can be a lethal event even though the amount of radiation give off [...]
