Trying to stem the scourge of prescription drug abuse, an advisory panel of experts to the Food and Drug Administration voted on Friday to toughen the restrictions on painkillers like Vicodin that contain hydrocodone, the most widely prescribed drugs in the country.
The recommendation, which the drug agency is likely to follow, would limit access to the drugs by making them harder to prescribe, a major policy change that advocates said [...]

The UMW actually SUPPORTED OBAMA, and gave him over a MILLION DOLLARS of members money in 2008. Talk about the chicken voting for Colonel Sanders!!

Mack Wolford, a flamboyant Pentecostal pastor from West Virginia whose serpent-handling talents were profiled last November in The Washington Post Magazine , hoped the outdoor service he had planned for Sunday at an isolated state park would be a “homecoming like the old days,” full of folks speaking in tongues, handling snakes and having a “great time.” But it was not the sort of homecoming he foresaw.
Instead, Wolford, who turned 44 the previous [...]
NEW YORK (AP) — Sales of the nation’s two most popular prescription painkillers have exploded in new parts of the country, an Associated Press analysis shows, worrying experts who say the push to relieve patients’ suffering is spawning an addiction epidemic.

Last October, the Huffington Post reported:
Coal here is getting harder and costlier to dig – and the region, which includes southern West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee, is headed for a huge collapse in coal production.
The U.S. Department of Energy projects that in a little more than three years, the amount of coal mined here will be just half of what it was in 2008. That’s a significant loss of a signature [...]
This subject is worth a read. It is a national security issue for the US and it is being trumped by some green radicals. Pretty sure there are more some actual kids in a California who could use a head start program, thank god $45m of TAX PAYER MONEY went to a head start program for TURTLES.
For an idea of how Canada is saying NO to the same Green radicals [...]
From what I have read and heard, the Great Depression was far worse. Rural Appalachia shocked Eleanor Roosevelt after she worked as the eyes and ears for President Roosevelt.
In the State of Florida, there are counties that have gone into these conditions. It was interesting that there was no talk about their Food Stamp eligibility. Clearly, as direly impoverished as they are, they certainly do qualify to receive them. Another [...]

The Real U.S. Map, a Country of Regions (Part 5): Colin Woodard By Colin Woodard – Oct 4, 2011
Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) – In “American Nations,” I’ve sought to show how our Balkanized past has informed our divided present, in the hopes of fostering a better understanding of the American identity and predicament. But inevitably people ask what this means for the future.
The short answer is, of [...]
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rural America now accounts for just 16 percent of the nation’s population, the lowest ever.
The latest 2010 census numbers hint at an emerging America where, by midcentury, city boundaries become indistinct and rural areas grow ever less relevant. Many communities could shrink to virtual ghost towns as they shutter businesses and close down schools, demographers say.
More metro areas [...]
Tripping is a network that connects travelers with hosts in more than 130 countries.
Although the free homestay is a plus, Tripping members also connect for travel tips and cups of coffee. “I don’t just go to tripping when I want to be hosted, I also check it out for news from other travelers, to chat with other members,” says Rease Kirchner, a Tripper in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
