A probe the size of a small car will hurtle through the Martian atmosphere at 13,000mph early on Monday morning using engineering which, if successful, could lay the path for the first manned Mars landing.

Using a giant £1.67 billion heat shield, the world’s biggest supersonic parachute and eight rocket thrusters, scientists hope Curiosity, a super robot kitted out with 17 cameras [...]

OUTSOURCED IN SPACE: NASA SENDS ASTRONAUT ON RUSSIAN ROCKET

Now, here’s some real Obama outsourcing.

This morning, Kazakhstan time, the next mission to the International Space Station successfully blasted off carrying the usual trio — a Russian commander, an astronaut from the international community and an American in a seat rented by NASA since the retirement of the last U.S. space shuttle a year ago this month.

NASA-TV will carry live coverage of the Tuesday docking starting about 12:15 a.m. ET and [...]

After voters sent a former “Saturday Night Live” star (Sen. Al Franken), a hit recording artist (former Rep. Sonny Bono) and an astronaut (former Sen. John Glenn) to Congress, a former Miss America Pageant winner wants to try her hand at lawmaking.

Erika Harold, who won the Miss America crown in 2003, passed the first hurdle this week in becoming the Republican candidate to replace Illinois Rep. Tim Johnson, who dropped [...]

Swiss build ‘janitor’ satellites to clean up space junk

GENEVA (AP) — The tidy Swiss want to clean up space.

Swiss scientists said Wednesday they plan to launch a “janitor satellite” specially designed to get rid of orbiting debris known as space junk.

The 10-million-franc ($11-million) satellite called CleanSpace One – the prototype for a family of such satellites – is being built by the Swiss Space Center at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausanne, or EPFL.

EPFL said Wednesday [...]

Space station’s humanoid robot awake

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s humanoid robot has finally awakened in space.

Ground controllers turned Robonaut on Monday for the first time since it was delivered to the International Space Station in February. The test involved sending power to all of Robonaut’s systems. The robot was not commanded to move; that will happen next week.

Robotics shutdown briefly strands astronaut

(AP) CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A robotic system shutdown interrupted Monday’s spacewalk outside the International Space Station, leaving an astronaut stuck with an 800-pound pump in his hands for nearly a half-hour.

Good thing it was weightless.

Spacewalker Stephen Bowen was in no danger, but it didn’t sound pleasant.

Mission Control asked if he was comfortable.

“I’m fine as long as it’s not too much longer,” Bowen radioed. “How much longer?”

Bowen was perched on [...]
