Remember we defaulted on the dollar and had to leave the Bretton Woods policy in 1971. We had 40 years of democratic control of the House where the legislation (along with the Senate, also controlled by the democrats for all but six of those 40 years) that caused the problems we have today was passed and signed by Presidents of both parties.
