From The Local (Sweden): Sweden’s Agricultural Board on Tuesday proposed a tax on meat, to discourage consumption of a product that supposedly strains the environment because much of it has to be imported.
The news report said Swedish meat consumption has increased around 33 percent over the past 30 years and is now higher than the EU average.
Solar Cycle 24 just peaked and is far lower than all the world’s great sun scientists predictions, what does it mean?
First the evidence, here’s NOAA’s latest chart:
Take a close look at the smoothed blue line, the lagging moving average has curved downward indicating the top is in and it is lower than even the latest revision by NASA.
This cycle is far lower than all the predictions, including lower than all [...]
Former Mitt Romney economic advisor Greg Mankiw admits something that he probably would never have said during the campaign: Middle class tax rates can’t be set in stone. They might have to rise, too.
In a column at the NYT, Mankiw argues that if we’re going to get real about connecting spending to revenue, and if we want to keep (for the most part) the level of entitlements we’ve come to expect, some kind of tax [...]
Last month, environmentalists cheered as California launched a cap-and-trade program, but talks of a federal carbon tax raised concerns about double taxation.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that while the chances of a federal tax on carbon emissions being adopted are still remote, California state officials are worried enough to have started discussing the prospect.
“We are aware that it is a possibility, and we have been considering it as of late,” said California Air Resources [...]
The European Union on Tuesday backed down from a controversial plan to charge international airlines for the pollution they create on flights to and from the continent, facing retaliation from the U.S., China, and India and other nations who said it encroached on their sovereignty.
European Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard called for the bloc to “stop the clock” on the emissions trading system, or ETS, giving the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) another year to come up with a global solution [...]

A Melbourne family who claim they were slugged an extra $55 “carbon tax charge” when burying a relative were told “even the dead don’t escape the carbon tax”.
Erica Maliki and her family were burying her father-in-law at Springvale Cemetery when she was told the price per burial plot had increased because of the carbon tax.
Her father-in-law died on June 30, the day before the carbon tax [...]
Australia has introduced its highly controversial carbon tax, after years of bitter political wrangling.
The law forces about 300 of the worst-polluting firms to pay a A$23 (£15; $24) levy for every tonne of greenhouse gases they produce.
The government says the tax is needed to meet climate-change obligations of Australia – the highest emitter per-head in the developed world.
But the opposition calls it a “toxic tax” that will cost jobs.
Words flew as CFACT’s Craig Rucker and Sir Richard Branson squared off at the Rio+20 Earth Summit in Brazil. Surrounded by Greenpeace activists, Branson was leaving the Greenpeace press conference just as Rucker was entering for CFACT’s press event.
Rucker seized the opportunity to confront the globe-trotting, fossil-fuel-burning Branson about his unlikely position on global warming.
“Sir, do you support the European carbon tax on your own planes going from the United [...]

Chicago is embarking on a $7 billion plan to transform the city’s infrastructure from the skies above to the pipes underground.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is planning to announce the initiative Thursday. It includes projects to expand the city’s largest airport and improve its streets, water system, schools, community colleges, parks and commuter rail network. The city estimates that these initiatives will create 30,000 jobs over the next three years.

India has barred its airlines from complying with the European Union’s carbon taxation scheme, with the government saying no Indian carrier would share emissions data with the EU.
“Though the European Union has directed Indian carriers to submit emission details of their aircraft by March 31, 2012, no Indian carrier is submitting them in view of the position of the government,” Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said Thursday in parliament.
“Hence the [...]
Three months ago, Connie Hedegaard, Europe’s climate commissioner, emerged triumphant from the international climate negotiations in Durban after she pieced together a well-regarded deal just as the talks seemed on the verge of collapse.
Ms Hedegaard’s secret, she said, was not to buckle. “I know that some other countries tried to go around saying, ‘Europe will always give in at the last moment; you don’t have to listen to them, they become [...]
Move is the latest challenge to the programme aimed at fighting global warming.
Paris China is blocking orders for at least $12 billion (Dh44 billion) worth of Airbus jets to protest the European Union’s emissions trading fees, in a new challenge to the programme aimed at fighting global warming, the aircraft maker said Thursday.
With some analysts warning of a brewing trade war, Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath said his company is seeing [...]

Mitt Romney, the establishment declared GOP front-runner, is the white Obama. He earns this title because on crucial issues he mirrors Barack Obama. Consider:
Climate agenda and carbon taxes:
He has stated that the theory of anthropogenic global warming is real. In 2005, as governor of Massachusetts, Romney imposed strict state limitations on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. In a memo issued by Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kerry Hale, the Romney [...]
China has warned the European Union to abandon its controversial carbon tax on airlines or risk provoking a global trade war.
Adding weight to the warning, an industry insider told the Financial Times that the Chinese government was seriously considering measures to hit back at the EU if it insists on charging international airlines for their carbon emissions.

October 17, 2011
An interesting piece from Investors.com notes that the corporate media darling GOP frontrunner, Mitt Romney, previously sought advice from White House science czar John P. Holdren when crafting carbon tax legislation for Massachusetts five years ago.
Under Romney’s leadership, Massachusetts became the first state in the country to pass legislation to regulate carbon emissions, [...]
One of the worst aspects of living in these apocalyptic times is that whenever you look around the world, wondering where you might escape to, you begin to realise that everywhere else is just as bad if not worse. Take Australia, an island built on fossil fuel with an economy dependent on fossil fuel. What would be the maddest economic policy a place like that [...]
