Communist Party now holds sway over American audiences

A scene from the new Brad Pitt movie World War Z had to be changed so as not to offend Chinese state censors, just one of numerous recent examples where American movies are being amended in order to please China’s ruling Communist Party leaders.
“In the offending scene, characters debate the geographic origin of an outbreak that caused a [...]

Japan scrambled fighter jets on Saturday to head off a Chinese state-owned plane that flew near islands at the centre of a dispute between Tokyo and Beijing, a Japanese Defense Ministry spokesman said.
The Japanese jets were mobilised after a Chinese maritime aircraft ventured some 120 kilometres (74 miles) north of the Senkaku islands, which China calls the Diaoyus, at around 12:00 pm (0300 GMT), the spokesman said.

A gas tanker that exploded killing three firemen in central China on Saturday was still burning a day later, Chinese state television reported on Sunday. The tanker overturned on Saturday morning on the Changde-Jishou Expressway in Huaihua City, in the Yunling county area of Hunan Province. The firemen were killed when the tanker exploded after they had arrived to deal with the overturned vehicle. Surveillance footage shows the tanker lying [...]
Tampa – China’s state-controlled media lashed out at GOP presidential candidate Mitt RomneyMonday, warning that his policies would poison U.S.-China relations.
“By any standard, the U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s China policy, as outlined on his official campaign website, is an outdated manifestation of a Cold War mentality,” read a commentary in Monday’s China Daily. “It endorses the ‘China threat’ theory and focuses on containing China’s rise in the Asia-Pacific through bolstering the robust [...]
LONDON (MINEWEB) -
One thing that is most apparent about China relative to virtually any industry is that nothing is done without the approval, or instruction, of government. When you have an enormous population of over 1.3 billion – around 20% of the global population – the government’s policies are all aimed at maintaining order among its people, and for the past decade or so this has revolved around massive internal growth. [...]

Olympic champion Ye Shiwen said her extraordinary swim was a result of ‘hard work and training’
Watching the new ‘Mandarin Mermaid’ glide to another suspiciously easy victory yesterday – the prelude to what will doubtless be her second gold medal of these Games – my thoughts returned to the disturbing interview I conducted with another swimming sensation [...]
Lennar Corp., LEN +0.80% one of the U.S.’s largest home builders, is in talks with the China Development Bank for approximately $1.7 billion in capital to jump-start two long-delayed San Francisco projects that would transform two former naval bases into large-scale housing developments, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The negotiations aren’t final and the financing arrangement could still fall through. But if completed, the deal would reflect a changing dynamic between the U.S. [...]
Chinese state-run newspaper People’s Daily has a long article today about a new scourge for Chinese society — teenage dating.
Of course, we’re being hyperbolic, but its true the article does give an interest insight into a society that was perhaps once more prudent than Western culture (for example, the minimum age for marriage is 22 for males and 20 for females), uncomfortably butting into more Western style-dating cultures.
Data found by reporter [...]
A Chinese state security official has been arrested on suspicion of spying for the United States, sources said, a case both countries have kept quiet for several months as they strive to prevent a fresh crisis in relations.
The official, an aide to a vice minister in China’s security ministry, was arrested and detained early this year on allegations that he had passed information to the United States for several years [...]
AFP: The United States on Wednesday opened its banking market to ICBC, China’s biggest bank, for the first time clearing a takeover of a US bank by a Chinese state-controlled company.
Just days after high-level US-China economic talks in Beijing, the Federal Reserve approved an application from Industrial and Commercial Bank of China to buy a majority stake in the US subsidiary of Bank of East Asia.
The transaction will make [...]

Professional subsidy-sucking General Motors, which seems content to marinate in its taxpayer “investment” indefinitely, is getting ambitious. No, not in the sense of paying back the $50 billion U.S. government bailout, or in producing vehicles people actually want to buy, but instead in finding other governments to subsidize its products.
Not surprisingly the new partner – in a 50-50 joint venture with the state-run auto industry [...]
Last week, one of the world’s most intractable disputes got even stickier. News leaked that the international-arm of India’s state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was in talks with the government of Vietnam over hydrocarbon exploration rights in the South China Sea. In most parts of the world this would seem a routine bi-lateral development between two countries driven by their dynamic economies. But [...]

Standard & Poor’s US debt downgrade was a wake-up call for the world, a commentary in a top Chinese state newspaper said, adding that Asian exporters faced special risks.
Citing economist Sun Lijian, the People’s Daily on Sunday said Standard & Poor’s Friday cut to the US’ credit rating from the top notch triple-A to AA+ had “sounded the alarm bell for the dollar-denominated global monetary [...]

From the early 1980s, debt-fuelled consumption in the United States drove global economic growth and facilitated the spread of globalization. Economic policy was formulated based upon the belief that markets are most efficient when left unregulated. Exchange rates floated, massive trade imbalances were ignored, and for three decades the world was [...]
