Appointee in charge of screening tax-exempt applications is now in charge of implementing new Obamacare taxes
Ousted Steven Miller defends himself, insists that targeting of conservatives was ‘foolish mistakes,’ not political gamesmanship
May 10 leak that launched the scandal was ‘prepared,’ Miller acknowledges
Former IRS commissioner testified last year that there was ‘absolutely no targeting’ going on

As IRS efforts targeting politically-conservative groups gained momentum, George Soros-funded liberal groups repeatedly called on the IRS to investigate conservative nonprofit organizations.
While the first reported instances of extra IRS scrutiny for conservative groups began in Cincinnati in March of 2010, the attacks began to pick up steam on a national level soon after Soros-funded groups began firing off letters to the IRS in October of that year – following the [...]
The IRS is under siege for investigating conservative political groups applying for tax-exempt status. But the real problem wasn’t that the IRS was too aggressive. It was that the agency focused on the wrong people—“none of those groups were big spenders on political advertising; most were local Tea Party organizations with shoestring budgets,” writes The New York Times—and wasn’t aggressive enough. The outrage that Washington should be talking about—what my colleague [...]
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Monday that the IRS should be condemned for targeting conservative groups for special scrutiny in the run-up to last year’s elections, but she also blamed the Supreme Court for opening the door to broader political activity.
In the Citizens United decision, the court ruled 5-4 that corporations have First Amendment political rights and ruled that while they cannot contribute directly to candidates, they can run [...]
Great work.
To mark the Citizens United 2nd anniversary, a group called The Other 98 lit up the outside of the Supreme Court with giant dollar signs to send a message: rights are for PEOPLE, notcorporate ”persons.”

This time in the light of day:
Toss the Citizens United decision out, but make sure it applies to unions as well. There should be limits on political spending by both corporations AND unions.

CAIRO — On the eve of his first trip to the United States as Egypt’s new Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi said the United States needed to fundamentally change its approach to the Arab world, showing greater respect for its values and helping build a Palestinianstate, if it hoped to overcome decades of pent-up anger.
A former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mr. Morsi sought in a 90-minute interview with The New York [...]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Internal Revenue Service may be weighing changes to how it polices tax-exempt political groups amid charges the tax agency has been lax on enforcement for a new breed of campaign funding organizations with vast resources.
Tax-exempt groups are raising and spending record amounts of money in attempting to sway the November 6 elections, bolstered by the Supreme Court’s landmark “Citizens United” ruling in 2010, which lifted some [...]
Jeff Faux of the Economic Policy Institute argues Americans are in denial. Everyone knows, he says, but no one faces up to the fact that the United States can no longer afford to have subsidized unregulated markets, be the world’s global power and provide a steadily rising standard of living. One of these is possible, maybe two, but not all three, according to Faux. No group — and certainly no [...]
Opponents of Barack Obama’s healthcare reforms have lashed out at John Roberts after the Chief Justice provided the crucial vote which led to the Supreme Court upholding the controversial law yesterday.
Mr Roberts, who was appointed to the court by George W. Bush in 2005, had long been seen as a stalwart conservative.
But in siding with the court’s more liberal wing, he has alienated the right – and has since been [...]

In a brief unsigned decision, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to have another look at its blockbuster 2010 campaign finance decision, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. In a 5-to-4 vote, the majority summarily reversed a decision of the Montana Supreme Court that had refused to follow the Citizens United decision.
“The question presented in this case is whether the holding of Citizens United applies to the [...]
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday reaffirmed its 2-year-old decision allowing corporations to spend freely to influence elections. The justices struck down a Montana law limiting corporate campaign spending.
By a 5-4 vote, the court’s conservative justices said the decision in the Citizens United case in 2010 applies to state campaign finance laws and guarantees corporate and labor union interests the right to spend freely to advocate for or [...]
At the end of 2011, I introduced a Constitutional amendment to overturn a key provision of Citizens United v. FEC, the Supreme Court decision that opened the floodgates for special-interest influence on elections and in Washington. The bill establishes that financial expenditures and in-kind contributions do not qualify as protected speech under the First Amendment. It also enables Congress to set up a public financing system that would serve as the sole [...]
No, it’s not your imagination: President Barack Obama is spending a whole lot of time fundraising, perhaps more than any incumbent president in history.
Including this week’s trip to California, he will have spent eight of 24 weekdays during the past month – that’s a third of them – on the road and collecting cash.
(Also on POLITICO: Obama’s $5.3 million West Coast swing)
His event Thursday morning will mark his 153rd fundraiser since announcing [...]

WASHINGTON — A day after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, retired Justice John Paul Stevens on Wednesday night backed President Barack Obama’s suggestion during his 2010 State of the Union address that the Citizens United decision could lead to “foreign entities” bankrolling American elections.
He urged [...]

Hotshot political consultant Matt Machowiak is a rising star in the very lucrative world of political consulting. His firm, the Potomac Strategy Group, helps Republicans win elections, but he’s not working with Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign this election year.
People who are part of Machowiak’s tribe — the strategists, the opposition researchers, the pollsters — are discovering that they can have a much bigger impact [...]
In Wisconsin, despite a year of negative publicity, polls that showed Walker behind ANY Dem. candidate for nearly six months, massive grass roots resistance and on the ground action……Walker will likely keep his governorship BECAUSE HE HAS 25 TIMES THE MONEY OF HIS OPPONENT, Barret AND even more will be spent by those who are NOT OFFICIALLY part of the campaign, but whose superpac interest groups just so happen to correspond [...]
NYT: After months on the sidelines, major liberal donors including the financier George Soros are preparing to inject up to $100 million into independent groups to aid Democrats’ chances this fall. But instead of going head to head with the conservative “super PACs” and outside groups that have flooded the presidential and Congressional campaigns with negative advertising, the donors are focusing on grass-roots organizing, voter registration and Democratic turnout.
The departure from the [...]

President Obama’s decision to encourage his donors to give to a super PAC does more than just empower an outside group looking to level the playing field with Republican groups.
It also opens to the door to a kind of influence peddling that was banned a decade ago under a landmark campaign finance law — with ramifications that go far beyond the scope of theCitizens United case that the White [...]

We have seen the world created by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, and it doesn’t work. Oh, yes, it works nicely for the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country, especially if they want to shroud their efforts to influence politics behind shell corporations. It just doesn’t happen to work if you think we are a democracy and not a plutocracy.
Two years ago, Citizens United tore down a [...]
