WEATHERFORD (CBSDFW.COM) – A modified game of tag, played at night, with cars and up to 60 people, has grown to the point in Weatherford that police had to put out a warning. Police said they started getting clusters of phone calls over the summer about prowlers outside homes. Often it [...]

Pres. Obama on Romney and Bain: ‘When you’re president, your job is not simply to maximize profits’

President Obama, responding to a reporter’s question at today’s NATO summit, makes the case for why Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital is relevant to the 2012 campaign:

“The reason why this is relevant to the campaign is that my opponent, Governor Romney, his main calling card for why he thinks he should be president is his business experience. He’s not going out there touting his experience in Massachusetts. He’s saying, [...]

Horrifying moment a man jokingly puts boy in a washing machine… and the door automatically locks as cycle starts

This is the dramatic moment a foolish couple decided it would be a good idea to freak out their child by putting him in a washing machine.

It starts off like any average scene at a Laundromat, with a few clusters of people sorting out their laundry into machines.

A sign in the left hand corner of the frame reads ‘Junior wash $2.95’. But it was not supposed to be taken quite [...]

Austerity, Social Unrest, And Europe’s ‘Lose-Lose’ Proposition

The link between government spending cuts and social unrest is highly non-linear and extremely troublesome. We first noted the must-read quantification of the relationship between so-called CHAOS of social unrest and spending cuts back in early January and this brief lecture reiterates some of the frightening conclusions. Critically, small spending cuts impact social unrest in very marginal ways but once the cuts begin to rise to 2-3% of GDP then the probability of considerable and [...]

Spicy tuna sushi rolls may be behind 19-state outbreak of salmonella that has struck 90 people

An outbreak of salmonella that has struck 90 people in America may be linked to sushi as food and health safety officers investigate ‘highly suspect’ spicy tuna rolls.

The outbreak has spread across 19 states and the district of Columbia with seven of the 90 reported cases needing to be hospitalised for treatment.

So far no one has died from the salmonella outbreak – caused by contaminated food – which can be [...]

The volcano is the Ubehebe, a large volcanic crater to the north of Death Valley. The team, led by Peri Sasnett of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, have published [...]

Barclays Capital has mapped an “unhealthy correlation” between construction of the world’s tallest buildings and looming financial crises over the last 140 years, including the Great Depression and the Asian financial crisis.

Today, China is home to over half the 124 skyscrapers now under construction worldwide.

India, which has just two skyscrapers, is building 14, including the world’s second tallest tower, in the financial capital Mumbai.

From Reuters:

The United States’ new defense strategy focused on the Asia-Pacific region is directed at containing China’s rise, the People’s Liberation Army’s newspaper said on Tuesday in Beijing’s strongest warning yet against the new Pentagon stance.

The commentary in the Liberation Army Daily, however, also said China’s sensible response to the U.S. military re-focus on Asia should be “vigilance” and smart diplomacy, not panic.

The United States is “laying out forces across [...]

Windows 8, Metro, and the Linux Desktop

What does the Windows 8 Developer Preview have to do with the Linux desktop? Not much, you might think at first, especially since the final version is likely to be vastly different than the preview.

But as I explored the preview, I couldn’t help asking myself: is this the first hint of how major desktops will look in the future on all operating systems? It’s a distinct [...]

Strong Indications of Gold & Silver Shortages

Since reaching new highs at the end of 2010 gold and silver have been sold off, and the selling has been particularly intense in the last few days. The news on the economy is almost exclusively bullish for the precious metals. From the price action one might be falsely led to believe that [...]
