Scientists have successfully bioengineered a kidney and implanted it into a living creature – work which could be an important step forward in the search for personalized replacement organs that could be transplanted into patients with kidney failure, according to media reports published Sunday.
According to Alok Jha, science correspondent with The Guardian, Dr. Harald Ott of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and colleagues took rat kidneys [...]
The stress of commuting can lead to workers dying earlier than their more relaxed colleagues
Commuters take more sick leave and gain more weight over their working lives
People complaining of a killer commute may be closer to the truth than they realise.
Research has found that workers with long commutes of over 30 miles die younger than those who live closer to their work.
Social geographer Erika Sandow from Sweden’s Umeå University presented her [...]
120,000 in prison, 150% more than what they are designed to hold, can you say police state?
The governor of California and other leading authorities will be held in contempt of court in 20 days unless they find a way to release thousands of prisoners from the overcrowded state corrections system.
A panel of federal judges gave Gov. Jerry Brown and the state’s top corrections officials an ultimatum this week, ordering they [...]
A trend of smokers relighting cigarettes is related to economic factors finds researchers.
A research member at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and colleagues found that the practice also had implications for tobacco dependence treatment and policy.
In these difficult economic times, increasing numbers of smokers have been smoking fewer cigarettes per day but are relighting the end portion of the cigarette that is typically discarded.
Investigators explored this behaviour, examining a [...]

from Fox News:
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a renewed assault-weapons ban, advancing the measure to the Senate floor where it will face intense resistance from Republicans and other gun-rights supporters.
The bill was approved by the committee on a party-line, 10-8 vote. Chief sponsor, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said she knows “the road is uphill” for the legislation, but sought to press her colleagues to consider the bill.
“Are we going [...]
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri lawmaker is proposing to send colleagues to prison for introducing gun control legislation — a plan that even its sponsor acknowledges has no chance of passage but nonetheless highlights the increasingly strident tone of gun measures in Missouri’s generally pro-gun Legislature.

Books aside, if you asked a college freshman today who the Greatest Generation is, they might respond by pointing in a mirror.
Young people’s unprecedented level of self-infatuation was revealed in a new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has been asking students to rate themselves compared to their peers since 1966.
Roughly 9 million young people have taken the survey over the last 47 years.

A woman went to see her doctor complaining that she could not open her right eye. The Los Angeles woman in her late sixties explained that after undergoing a cosmetic procedure a few months earlier, her right eye seemed to have glued itself shut. While she could not open her right eye without feeling excruciating pain, she said that every single time she tried to pry it open, she heard [...]
You may have noticed some economic difficulties across the country in recent years among family, friends, neighbors, colleagues. One sector is doing quite nicely, however, under Barack Hussein Obama.
In the 1,420 days since he took the oath of office, the federal government has daily hired on average 101 new employees. Every day. Seven days a week. All 202 weeks. That makes 143,000 more federal workers than when Obama talked forever [...]
THE nurse who took a prank call from two Australian DJs asking about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge has been found dead this morning.
Tragic Jacintha Saldanha, 46, is believed to have committed suicide as police are not treating the death as suspicious.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge issued a statement saying they were “deeply saddened” by the death of Jacintha, described by the hospital as an “excellent nurse” who was [...]

From my own personal observations you have a very good chance of being killed in hospital even with a minor ailment or for routine treatment by medical staff who don’t care a fuck.
This is not about cutbacks it is about staff ATTITUDES. There are too many psycopaths and staff who generally don’t care in the NHS.
The consultants have always been arrogant and dismissive to a degree, they have just got [...]

Grapefruit poses a potentially lethal health risk to increasing numbers of patients taking prescription drugs, experts have warned. The fruit contains chemicals that can interact with certain drugs, making them more potent. Adverse effects can include acute kidney failure, respiratory failure, internal bleeding and sudden death.
While it is well known that some patients should avoid grapefruit, or grapefruit juice, the list of drugs involved has risen sharply in recent years.

State Representative Debbie Riddle (R – 150) loves the word ‘integrity.’ She was also a big supporter of recent Bill HB 16, which would have required Texas voters to present proof of identification. “Y’see, that’s very important because the very freedom of our nation is based on the integrity of our ballot box,” she said. “And if things are so lax that fraudulent voting can occur, then that means your vote can [...]

The days when invisibility cloaks were confined to the world of “Harry Potter” may soon be over. Physicists at Duke University announced Monday that they had successfully cloaked an object with “perfect” invisibility.
Attempts at creating an invisibility “cloak” began in 2006, when David Smith (also a co-author of the new study) and colleagues developed theory of “transformation optics,” BBC News reported. The theory centers on redirecting electromagnetic fields [...]
Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing ”extremely poor judgment” for having an extramarital affair, NBC News reported.
“Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position,” Petraeus said in a letter to CIA colleagues. “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is [...]
Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan will return the House and resume his duties as chairman of the Budget Committee, putting aside immediate questions about the Wisconsin Republican’s future in D.C.
But even some of Ryan’s closest colleagues in the House wonder how long he can stay — or what his relationship will be with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other party leaders — as he keeps an eye on a possible White [...]
The United States had an unmanned Predator drone over its consulate in Benghazi during the attack that slaughtered four Americans — which should have led to a quicker military response, it was revealed yesterday.
“They stood, and they watched, and our people died,” former CIA commander Gary Berntsen told CBS News.
The network reported that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft observed the final hours of the hours-long siege on Sept. 11 [...]
Lady Gaga has blamed her recent weight gain on eating all the scrumptious food her parents are cooking up at their New York restaurant, but that may just be daughterly love talking.
The restaurant, named Joanne Trattoria, was recently reviewed by the New York Daily News where it received a whopping one star and quite possibly the worst restaurant review ever.
Food critic Michael Kaminer said, “I came with an open mind, despite the fact that most of my [...]

Falling sales. Too many factories producing too many cars at excessive cost. Mounting losses at manufacturers. An urgent need for action. That’s what my colleagues and I found when we took up our posts as members of Barack Obama’s auto taskforce and that is what confronts European carmakers today – except without a taskforce or a central government to ram through the needed changes. After struggling for years to regulate storefront pot shops, the Los Angeles City Council retreated Tuesday, voting to repeal the carefully crafted ban on medical marijuanadispensaries it approved a few months ago.
The move shows the political savvy of the increasingly organized and well-funded network of marijuana activists who sought to place a referendum overturning the ban on the March ballot, when the mayor and eight council seats will be up for grabs.

Maybe Lady Gaga’s parents are forsaking their famous daughter.
How else to explain Joanne Trattoria, Joe and Cynthia Germanotta’s incomprehensible upper West Side eatery?
As if on purpose, the place is missing the creativity and commitment that made their daughter a star. The result is a careless, lifeless production that feels like a weird facsimile of a restaurant rather than the real thing.
I came with an open mind, despite the fact that most [...]
Intelligence sources tell Fox News they are convinced the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was directly tied to Al Qaeda — with a former Guantanamo detainee involved.
That revelation comes on the same day a top Obama administration official called last week’s deadly assault a “terrorist attack” — the first time the attack has been described that way by the administration after claims it had been a [...]
Neurosurgeon and researcher Dr. Leif Salford has conducted many studies on radio frequency radiation and its effects on the brain. Dr. Salford called the potential implications of some of his research “terrifying.” Some of the most concerning conclusions result from the fact that the weakest exposure levels to wireless radiation caused the greatest effect in causing the blood brain barrier to leak.
Since he began his line of research in 1988, Dr. Leif Salford and [...]
