Susan Rice Poised for Promotion, Despite Benghazi

Insiders with ties to the Obama administration tell The Cable that U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice has become the heir apparent to National Security Advisor Tom Donilon – a post at the epicenter of foreign-policy decision making and arguably more influential than secretary of state, a job for which she withdrew her candidacy last fall amid severe political pressure.

“It’s definitely happening,” a source who recently spoke with Rice told The Cable. “She is sure [...]

Update: The revolution in higher education is already starting

From Carpe Diem:

A few days ago, I reported on how MITx could revolutionize higher education by offering free online classes, along with a new benefit: credentials. Beginning this spring, students will be able to take free online courses from MIT, and if they prove they’ve learned the material through an assessment, they can pay a fee and receive a certificate from MITx.

In a related recent development, Felix Salmon and The [...]

Is Romney courting Rand Paul? Report: Mitt Romney holds private meeting with Rand Paul on Wednesday

For many conservatives, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is a unique specimen. A literal scion of one of the most controversial Republican political figures in recent memory, Paul has managed to form a cordial relationship with mainstream conservatives quite a bit less problematic than the active hostility courted by his doggedly contrarian father, and in the process, has become one of the more influential Tea Party figures in Washington. His name [...]

From Capitalism is Freedom:

Fort Leonard Wood Public Affairs director Tiffany Wood has provided the first official response to the shocking U.S. Army document that outlines the implementation of re-education camps, admitting that the manual was “not intended for public release” and claiming that its provisions only apply outside the United States, a contention completely disproved by the language contained in the document itself.

After a reader sent Wood a link to [...]

When ignorance not bliss: US politicians without borders

Every four years, as another US presidential election comes around, along comes a new batch of candidates with dodgy foreign policy credentials. Their blunders have inspired endless jokes, but they also discredit America in the eyes of the world.

From Palin’s famous: “You can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska,” to Michele Bachmann’s public support for waterboarding, some US politicians demonstrate a lack of basic knowledge of geography and international law.

Instead, it’s going to use corn, a common source for conventional biofuels. What’s more, most of the product from its first [...]

Video shows police officer intentionally blocking the shots of a credentialed photojournalist covering a demonstration at the World Financial Center

BY JOE POMPEO, Capital NewYork

It still seems like not all New York Police Department officers got that memo from their boss a few weeks ago warning them not to interfere with members of the media during police actions such as those that have been ongoing as a result of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

In this video, police are shown getting physical with and intentionally blocking the shots of a credentialed photojournalist covering [...]

Besides the teacher’s union being critical of the software approach to assisting the screening of teachers online, principal complain that applicants they wanted to hire are now not [...]

Einstein dies and goes to heaven.

At the Pearly Gates, Saint Peter tells him, “You look like Einstein, but you have NO idea the lengths that some people will go to sneak into Heaven. Can you prove who you really are?”

Einstein ponders for a few seconds and asks, “Could I have a blackboard and some chalk?”

Saint Peter snaps his fingers and a blackboard and chalk instantly appear. Einstein proceeds to describe with arcane mathematics and symbols [...]

“An education is essential to your child’s future….” Time for a rethink on this one.

Grant Ellis:

I got a BS in electrical engineering. At $16.50/quarter-hour (1979 dollars), the cost/benefit has been terrific. At today’s cost/hour, an engineering degree may still make economic sense….but what about degrees that simply cannot or will not spark a decent return-on-investment?

We send way, way too many kids to college believing that a degree (presumably any degree) is the ticket to success. It’s a lie….an expensive lie….practically cultural extortion.

Perhaps class costs [...]
