The scenario that is much more likely based on the fall of past civilizations is something like this:

We have not been shy about exposing the massive (and unsustainable) bubble of credit being blown into the economy via Student Loans from the government. We have not been afraid to note the dramatic rise in delinquencies among these loans - and the implications for the government. However, as Bloomberg reports, it appears the impact of this exuberance has come back to bite the colleges themselves. In what can only be described as a vendor-financing [...]
Books aside, if you asked a college freshman today who the Greatest Generation is, they might respond by pointing in a mirror.
Young people’s unprecedented level of self-infatuation was revealed in a new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has been asking students to rate themselves compared to their peers since 1966.
Roughly 9 million young people have taken the survey over the last 47 years.
Pyschologist Jean Twenge and her colleagues [...]
A new controversial study is claiming that American children are getting smarter and that girls are catching up with boys when it comes to mathematics.
Researchers at Duke University in North Carolina tackled the age old debate of ‘nature versus nurture’ in their study by investigating rising IQ scores over the past few decades.
They also looked at why the gap between the sexes seems to be closing in areas that were [...]

Have you heard of the massive sinkholes popping up around the nation? Flammable craters spanning acres wide and leaking radiation, monster sinkholes described as ‘apocalyptic’ have forced residents out of homes, expelled radiation into the environment, and are now ushering in concerns about serious Earth changes in the near future. If you’ve heard of these sinkholes, chances are it has been from the alternative media.
It’s a hot [...]
TORONTO (THE GOLD REPORT) -
The Gold Report: Last November, you talked about indicators you use to make investment decisions, mentioning the S&P 500, the PHLX Gold/Silver Sector Index (XAU:NASDAQ), the AMEX Gold BUGS Index (HUI:NYSE) and the TSX Venture Exchange. You recently predicted junior explorer stocks would stay low over the summer before recovering, along with the commodity price. What indicators are behind that, and do you foresee a dramatic rise or a gradual [...]

“Bank for International Settlements reports that world’s central banks are holding £11tn after purchasing government bonds
Almost 30% of global GDP, or $18tn (£11tn), is held by central banks after purchasing government bonds and pumping liquidity into the financial system to ease the current crisis.
This is double the level of ten years ago, according to the latest annual report from the Bank for International Settlements.

Markets are destroying Spanish equities right now, as investors jitter over how Spain will manage a €19 billion ($24 billion) bailout of the country’s third largest bank, Bankia.
This angst is manifesting in bets against the Spanish government, with investors freaking out that yields on 10-year bonds are nearing 6.5 percent.
But even more worrisome is the dramatic rise in borrowing costs on shorter-term debt maturing in less than three years. Rising [...]
In a wonderfully succinct clip, Professor Antony Davies addresses the oft-cited perspective that Government has a debt problem. While correct in fact, he examines the data and summarily notes that debt is caused by deficits leaving the question of what’s to blame - too much spending or too little tax revenues? The dramatic rise in spending per-capita by the government is exponentially larger than the rise in price levels over the last [...]
From FT:
A powerful revival of France’s radical left, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a former socialist minister, and with a resurgent Communist party at its core, looks poised to be one of the most striking outcomes of next Sunday’s first round of voting in the country’s presidential election.
Mr Mélenchon, who has emerged from relative obscurity to become the most dynamic figure in the campaign, reinforced his dramatic rise at the weekend, drawing [...]

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and can spread rapidly.
Ignoring the warnings: Tanning beds are well-known to increase the risk of developing melanoma

A week ago we had the displeasure of reminding America that in 8 years three quarters of the population will be obese. We said that “many forget that a much more serious long term issue for the US (assuming anyone cares what happens in the long run) is a far more ominous secular shift in US population – namely the fact that everyone is getting fatter fast, aka America’s “obesity epidemic.” And [...]

WASHINGTON — Two economists at the St. Louis Federal Reserve have published findings that indicate that Wall Street speculation is responsible for 15 percent of the increase in oil prices over the past decade, a finding with significant implications for the recent sharp rise in gas prices.
“Speculation was the second-largest contributor to [...]
With Fed officials a laughing stock (both inside and outside the realm of FOMC Minutes), Bank of Japan officials ever-watching eyes, and ECB officials in both self-congratulatory (Draghi) and worryingly concerned on downgrades (Nowotny), the world’s central bankers appear, if nothing else, convinced that all can be solved with the printing of some paper (and perhaps a measure of harsh words for those naughty spendaholic politicians). The dramatic rise in central bank balance [...]

(Reuters) – Tobacco will kill nearly six million people this year, including 600,000 non-smokers, because governments are not doing enough to persuade people to quit or protect others from second-hand smoke, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.
Since there is often a lag of many years between when people start smoking and when it affects health, the epidemic of tobacco-related disease and death [...]
