Supreme Court Won’t Review Telecom Immunity For Surveillance

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to consider a challenge to a 2008 federal law granting immunity to AT&T Inc and other telecommunications companies for helping the government eavesdrop on customers’ private phone conversations.

Section 802 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, passed in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001, bars a variety of civil actions against anyone providing assistance to the intelligence community.

If One Storm Can Turn D.C. Dark For Several Days, What Would A Massive EMP Burst Do?

by Michael

Sometimes we all get a little reminder of just how completely and totally dependent we are on the power grid.  Massive thunderstorms that ripped through Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia left millions without power over the weekend.  At this point it is being projected that some people may not get power back until the end of the week.  The “super derecho” storm that pounded the Washington [...]

This just crossing the streams:

ECB TO STOP PREPARATIONS FOR COLLATERAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

And the actual statement:

We will survive but our quality of life is eroding to subsidize banks who should be allowed to collapse

I could get silver dollars at the bank for one dollar in 1963. Same silver dollar today is $30 bank debt notes and buys twice today what it bought in 1963. Dow in 1963 was $700. Dow in 2012 in real silver dollars is $600. I think that is about right.

The baby boom caused the run up from 1971 to 2000, the bubble in stocks and real estate, and the [...]

Achilles’ heel: housing

by TK

My new housing sales to employment ratio – note that the housing market CREATES jobs, and the JOBS create the housing market. NEITHER is CREATING ANYTHING:

Year …. Ratio …. Total (1,000) …. Emp (1,000)
1963 …. 0.780 …. 560 …. 71,833
1964 …. 0.773 …. 565 …. 73,091
1965 …. 0.772 …. 575 …. 74,455
1966 …. 0.608 …. 461 …. 75,770
1967 …. 0.631 …. 488 …. 77,347

Here’s a interesting bit of information for those of you who truly follow the economy.

by TKWallace

Note that the last three years the labor pool has not grown at all – never before happened, the worst three years of new housing sales are the last three, and the ratios have plummeted after 9 years above average. I track this for two reasons – one, the market for new homes is the labor force, and if they are buying, things are going [...]

One of my favorite analysis – the new homes vs. the labor pool.

Two things happen on this ratio, shows the MARKET for the people buying new homes, and JOB GROWTH that new homes are generating for the labor pool. Please note that prior to this depression the worst year was 1982.

Now, the last five years are getting progressively worse with the last three the ALL-TIME worst and getting worse.

Year …. Ratio…. Total (1,000)…. Emp (1,000)
1963 …. 0.780 …. 560 …. 71,833
1964 …. [...]
