Tiny Device Will Detect Domestic Drones

Worried about drones spying on you? Soon, a device might be able to send you text and email alerts that let you know when a drone is nearby.

A Washington, D.C.-based engineer is working on the “Drone Shield,” a small, Wi-Fi-connected device that uses a microphone to detect a drone’s “acoustic signatures” (sound frequency and spectrum) when it’s within range.

The company’s founder, John Franklin, who has been working in aerospace engineering [...]

IRAN: WE POACHED YOU DRONE!

The video aired late on Wednesday shows an aerial view of an airport and a city, said to be Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Iran has long claimed it managed to reverse-engineer the RQ-170 Sentinel and that it’s capable of launching its own production line for the unmanned aircraft.

Nebraska set to pump water from aquifer into river!

A pipeline will be laid as soon as possible in the “water farm” project in southern Lincoln County.

Officials want to get the pipeline in operation by June 2013. They will meet Monday in McCook to consider an engineer for the project.

The project, which officially began just six weeks ago, will convert the largest crop farm in Nebraska to a farm from which only water will be harvested.

Conservation officials officially bought [...]

Giant sinkholes in Queens after Hurricane Sandy,Alarm street may collapse(VIDEO)

Caption: Residents have noticed a cluster of similar holes on their properties, causing alarm that the street may collapse.

Storm recovery volunteer Steve Major picked up on a pattern of the holes as he was going door-to-door for a relief group last week along Beach 68th St. near Bayfield Ave.

“I’m extremely concerned that what’s visible isn’t the full extent of it,” said Major, an engineer and construction worker who came from [...]

Man ‘beats cancer’ by changing diet, apparently.

Doctors told Allan Taylor, 78, in April that his cancer couldn’t be treated and had spread from his colon to his small intestine
In August the retired oil rig engineer from Middlesbrough got another letter – to say he was cancer-free
He puts the change down to his new diet, which he adopted after looking up ‘colon cancer cures’ on the internet

A grandfather, who was told by doctors that his cancer was [...]

Olympians trade data for tracking devices

From FT:

Olympic athletes are giving up their personal physical data in exchange for the latest gadgets that record sleep, diet and exercise patterns as they try to boost their performance in this year’s games.

Several health technology companies plan to use the athletes’ data to help re-engineer the tracking devices and later reposition the products for the amateur sports performance market or the $61bn weight loss market.

Pay ratio: 1 engineer in San Jose is equal to 3 engineers in India or 5 engineers in China

I live and work in Silicon Valley. I’ve been in the high tech industry for 15 years now. My current employers (been there ten years now) engineering teams in China and India have grown tremendously. Here’s the current pay ratio:

1 engineer in San Jose is equal to
3 engineers in India or
5 engineers in China

My employer will definitely take 1 engineer in India _and_ 2 engineers in China over one engineer [...]

ALERT! Unauthorized cameras installed in northern NY along highways, non police related.

Clip:

“At least half a dozen boxes that apparently contain cameras have been hung on utility poles in St. Lawrence County, and in at least in one case, without authorization.

The Massena Electric Department recently removed one of the boxes from a pole it owns.

The cameras, in substantial light gray boxes mounted on the sides of poles, reportedly have been spotted in Massena, Norfolk, Norwood, Raymondville, Waddington, Canton, DeKalb Junction, and in [...]

This Internet giant is now admitting to outrageous privacy violations

From LewRockwell.com:

Google knew software for its Street View fleet could secretly collect personal data, including e-mails, pictures, and text messages from unprotected wi-fi networks, it has been claimed.

Documents seen by America’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) apparently show an engineer created the snooping technology called gstumbler which could capture data from inside residents’ homes as teams toured the country.

One particular document shows that the engineer flagged up privacy implications and said [...]

GOOGLE Staff ‘Unaware’ of Data Gathering… ‘E-mails, passwords, sensitive personal info from unsuspecting households’

From NYT:

SAN FRANCISCO — Google’s harvesting of e-mails, passwords and other sensitive personal information from unsuspecting households in the United States and around the world was neither a mistake nor the work of a rogue engineer, as the company long maintained, but a program that supervisors knew about, according to new details from the full text of a regulatory report.

The report, prepared by the Federal Communications Commission after a 17-month investigation of Google’s [...]

Why isn’t there more coverage on this, why aren’t people outraged, and why was the fine so ridiculously low?

The “engineer” took the 5th amendment.
The $25,000 fine is a drop in the bucket.
The FCC wanted Google to turn over the data collected to the government.  Google wanted to destroy the data, but couldn’t get permission from the government to destroy it.

This is not an acceptable “conclusion” to the “mistake”.

From Bloomberg:

Google Inc. (GOOG) employees who worked on a mapping-service project told the U.S. Federal Communications Commission they didn’t initially know about software that [...]

If this alarm clock won’t wake you, you’re probably dead: It has no snooze button, can’t be unplugged – and you have to punch in a PIN code to shut it up

There is no snooze button. If you unplug it, a battery takes over. As wake-up time approaches, you cannot reset the alarm time.

It could be the world’s most exasperating alarm clock.

Once it goes off, to stop it you must get out of bed, go into the kitchen or bathroom, and punch the day’s date into a telephone-style keypad.

That’s the only way to stop the loud `ding-ding,’ designed to sound like [...]

‘It was like something from a horror film’: ‘Certifiably insane’ Greek engineer stabbed American tourist 200 times in German hotel room before mutilating her body

A deranged Greek man who stabbed an American visitor to Germany nearly 200 times with a Swiss Army knife was told he will probably spend the rest of his life behind bars at the conclusion of his trial.

‘This was like something from a terrible horror film’ said Judge Wolfgang Backen, who said the victim’s corpse was badly mutilated in the frenzied attack.

Called ‘certifiably insane’ when he took the life of [...]

FOX8 Staff Writer11:26 a.m. EDT, July 18, 2011

UNION COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP)—

An electronic DOT road sign was apparently hacked when a displayed message read “Impeach Obama.”
