Quasar sends energy blast 2 trillion times more powerful than Sun!

Scientists have reported the largest blast of energy ever recorded from a far-off quasar, some two trillion times more energetic than the sun. The discovery may explain confusing discrepancies between the observed and predicted masses of black holes.

Quasars are extremely bright galaxy cores, at the center of which sits a black hole. Their light is generated when material is sucked into that black hole, creating large amounts of energy.

But quasars [...]

‘Super-earth’ near red dwarf Gliese 163c top contender for supporting life

Astronomers found it using the European Southern Observatory HARPS telescope (or High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher)

A newly-discovered ‘super-earth’ at the edge of a star’s habitable zone could be a top contender for an alien planet beyond ours which supports life.

Gliese 163c, which lies beside a red dwarf star, has a mass of 6.9 times that of Earth and an orbital period of 26 days.

Researchers believe the new-found world’s location [...]

Massive ‘vampire’ star systems fill the cosmos

A surprising number of massive stars in our Milky Way galaxy are part of close stellar duos, a new study finds, but most of these companion stars have turbulent relationships — with one “vampire star” sucking gas from the other, or the two stars violently merging to form a single star.

Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile studied massive O-type stars, which are very hot and incredibly [...]

Astronomers find new planet capable of supporting life

From Telegraph:

The planet lies in what they describe as a ‘habitable zone’, neither too near its sun to dry out or too far away which freezes it.

And the discovery could help answer the question of whether we are alone in the universe, which has been plagued astronomers and alien fanatics for years.

Scientists found the planet, Gliese 667Cc, orbiting around a red dwarf star, 22 light years away from the earth.

Red [...]

Billions of ‘habitable planets’ found

Researchers discovered that at least 100 of the ”super-Earths” may be on our galactic doorstep, at distances of less than 30 light years, or about 180 trillion miles, from the sun.

Astronomers say the findings were made after conducting a survey of red dwarf stars, which account for about four in five stars in the Milky Way.

They calculate that around 40 per cent of red dwarfs have a rocky planet not [...]

Astronomers find 50 new exoplanets, including ‘Super Earth’

This story was updated at 12:51 p.m. EDT.

More than 50 new alien planets — including one so-called super-Earth that could potentially support life — have been discovered by an exoplanet-hunting telescope from the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

The newfound haul of alien planets includes 16 super-Earths, which are potentially rocky worlds that are more massive than our planet. One in particular – called HD 85512 b [...]

The Milky Way Has a Galactic Twin

The image “could almost be a picture postcard of our own Milky Way”, said the ESO

Astronomers have released what they say is the best-yet picture of NGC 6744, a spiral galaxy described as a “sibling” of our own Milky Way.

The image was snapped by the European Southern Observatory’s MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope in Chile.

The galaxy lies 30 million light-years away, in the constellation Pavo.

While it is almost twice as large [...]
