For the past eight years NASA astronomers have been monitoring the moon for signs of explosions caused by meteoroids hitting the lunar surface.
Lunar meteor showers have turned out to be more common than anyone expected with hundreds of detectable impacts occurring every year.
They’ve just seen the biggest explosion in the history of the program. “On March 17, 2013 an object about the size of a small boulder [...]

While we are used to seeing insta-crashes in our highly-regulated and trustworthy equity markets, the unregulated digital world of Bitcoins suffered another flash-crash last night. According to Ars Technica, the 23% plungefest in the value of the digital currency (the second in a week) was due not to Waddel & Reed, not HFT algos, but ‘forking’ Cryptographic algos gone wild agreeing on different (legacy) keys as being correct - akin to finding Tungsten in your Gold bars [...]

Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments.

Some people may actually see sounds, say researchers who found this odd ability is possible when the parts of the brain devoted to vision are small.
These findings points to a clever strategy the brain might use when vision is unreliable, investigators added.
Scientists took a closer look at the sound-induced flash illusion. When a single flash is followed by two bleeps, people sometimes also see two illusory consecutive flashes.

Further deterioration in its manufacturing sector would certainly come as a blow to markets.
Unfortunately, massive stimulus looks increasingly unlikely.
The PMI reports are considered one of the more reliable economic indicators out of China. And those watching how the Chinese economic slowdown plays out will be watching this evening’s HSBC Flash PMI number very closely. This is the preliminary [...]

From Pragmatic Capitalism:

The eurozone looks destined for its second recession in three years, as business surveys showed the economic rot is even spreading to Germany, the region’s largest and strongest economy.
Markit’s Flash eurozone composite PMI, which measures manufacturing and services activity, edged up to 46.6 in August.
Although this was marginally better than the 46.5 forecast by economists, it is the seventh month that the PMI has fallen below the 50 level that divides growth from [...]

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) – After the ECB shocker, Nomura now expects market pressure to increase rapidly, “pushing Spain and Italy to activate the EFSF over the coming week or so,” forcing the ECB into some kind of action, they suggest. “This next leg of the crisis could prove more pronounced given the size of the bond markets involve” Nomura adds.
Growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector slowed in July to the second-weakest level since the country emerged from recession, according to a survey released Tuesday.
The Markit flash U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index dropped to 51.8 from 52.5 in June, which is the worst level since December 2010 and second-worst since late 2009. Any readings above 50 indicate an improvement from the prior month.

Earlier this month, the Flash (or preliminary) HSBC PMI number came in at 48.7.
Earlier this evening, we got the official May PMI number, which fell to 50.4 from 53.3 last month. This was much worse than the 52 economists were expecting.
Markets instantly sold off on the news.
