The US Defense Department has prepared plans for a smaller presence in Afghanistan after the White House insisted on examining the option of leaving fewer troops in the country after 2014 than was initially proposed, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The newspaper said the plans now prepared by the Pentagon call for leaving roughly 3,000, 6,000 or 9,000 US troops in the country.
Those troops would launch strikes against militants [...]

Amid a worsening fiscal crisis, a crumbling economy, and the destruction of over 40% of America’s wealth in just the last few years, it should be quite clear that this is no ordinary recession. In fact, with progressively dwindling job opportunities, a long-term downward trend in real estate prices, and the near doubling of participation in emergency benefits programs like food stamps and disability, one could make the argument that the United States is [...]

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.
- Thomas Jefferson
Only days after a NSA whistleblower has sounded the alarm about the government’s massive spying campaign on American citizens, the U.S. Congress who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution are set to legalize warrantless wiretaps with the reauthorization of the secretive FISA [...]
From The Daily Crux:
The Financial Post reports Israel – long considered a loser in the Middle East “oil lottery” – sits atop an enormous shale oil and gas formation. Geologists estimate the Shfela Basin contains some 250 billion barrels of oil. This is just one of several formations discovered within Israel’s borders.
The discovery has major implications for Israel… but they aren’t the only ones. U.S. and Canadian companies have pioneered horizontal [...]
Moscow is sending three large landing ships with marines aboard to a Russian naval facility in the Syrian port of Tartus, Russian news agencies quoted a source in the general staff as saying on Friday.
The source said each ship would have up to 120 marines on board and that the vessels, already in the Mediterranean, would arrive in Tartus by the end of this week or early next week.

As they stood outside the commandeered government building in the town of Mohassen, it was hard to distinguish Abu Khuder’s men from any other brigade in the Syrian civil war, in their combat fatigues, T-shirts and beards.
But these were not average members of the Free Syrian Army. Abu Khuder and his men fight for al-Qaida. They call themselves the ghuraba’a, or “strangers”, after a famous jihadi poem celebrating Osama bin Laden’s [...]

If a think tank spent a full week brainstorming the best way to foment a culture welcoming of extreme nationalism and a dictatorial regime, they couldn’t do much better than the euro zone. Economies built on debt inevitably fail with chaotic and often violent repercussions.
80 years after the fall of the Weimar Republic, human nature remains the same. The instinctive reaction to pain is to find a cause or scapegoat [...]
An Attack on Iran is Pearl Harbor Redux
When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, they did so on the basis of assumptions that were all false.
First, the Japanese assumed that Americans who were in the majority opposed to war with Germany and Italy would decline to mobilize and fight the Japanese. Given the passage of the military draft by on only one vote in 1939, the Japanese also assumed the American [...]

Just after France legislators and officials moved to ban Monsanto’s genetically modified strain of GMO maize over environmental and health concerns, the European Union has decided to step in and re-secure Monsanto’s presence in the country — against the very will of the nation itself. This should come as no surprise when considering the fact that the United States ambassador to France, a business partner to [...]
With Facebook set to hit the public markets at a valuation over $100 billion, another social network is stealing the spotlight this morning.
Pinterest, which investors think is the next Facebook, is raising over $100 million in funding at a $1.5 billion valuation.
Japanese e-commerce site Rakuten is the lead investor. Previous investors, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, also participated.
Rakuten has been trying (unsuccessfully) to get a foothold in the U.S. e-commerce market. Pinterest, which allows users to “pin” photos of their [...]
Vladimir Putin appeared to shed tears of joy the night he won back the presidency in March. After less than a week in office, he may be tempted to shed some in frustration.
Since his inauguration on Monday, the man whose 2000-2008 presidency was characterized by steely control and a cowed opposition has faced a wave of confrontations and misfortunes.
Opposition activists, energized by this winter’s unprecedented wave of massive protest rallies [...]

Some borrowers even have equity plans as repayment vehicles which will no longer be deemed eligible as repayment vehicles. Also many poorer borrowers or those becoming redundant as a means of continuing to maintain their property whilst trying to gain alternative [...]

Compelling new scientific evidence suggests United Nations peacekeepers have carried a virulent strain of cholera – a super bug — into the Western Hemisphere for the first time.
The vicious form of cholera has already killed 7,000 people inHaiti, where it surfaced in a remote village in October 2010. Leading researchers from Harvard Medical School and elsewhere told ABC News that, despite UN denials, there is now [...]

Nearly one third of Americans who were raised in the middle class dropped down the economic ladder as adults — and that’s before the Great Recession hit.
“Being raised in the middle class is not a guarantee that you’ll have that same status as an adult,” said Erin Currier, project manager at Pew’s Economic Mobility Project. “With all the economic turmoil in the past four years, there’s good [...]

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Hundreds of protesters gathered in Cesar Chavez Park on Thursday to stand in solidarity with the growing nationwide demonstrations aimed at corporate greed, but some members of the peaceful event showed hostility to media members over basic questions about the goals of the protest.

Nearly six of 10 Americans — 57% — say they won’t buy an all-electric car no matter the price of gas, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.
That’s a stiff headwind just as automakers are developing electrics to help meet tighter federal rules that could require their fleets to average as high as 62 miles per gallon in 2025. And President Obama has set a goal [...]
CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood said on Monday that U.S. soldiers should be withdrawn from Afghanistan and Iraq after the killing of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks that led to two U.S.-led wars.
Al Qaeda leader was killed in a firefight with U.S. forces in Pakistan on Sunday, U.S. President Barack Obama said.
“With Bin Laden’s death, one of the reasons for which violence has been [...]
A City College of New York student begins her job hunt.
From HuffPost:
NEW YORK — For David Cristello, the jobs are catch as catch can.
Cristello, 23, currently holds down five part-time jobs.
Come summer, when he starts a tennis camp in his native Natrona Heights, Pa., he’ll be at six.
Since graduating from the University of Pittsburgh last June, Cristello’s job search has yielded several part-time jobs, but no full-time work.

Here is how one offsets the aftereffects of concerns there may be a liquidity crisis in Europe: just make a few completely impossible statements about hiking interest rates and presto: your currency is back to unchanged. The EURUSD has surged by 60 pips in seconds following reports that the ECB’s Bini Smaghi was quoted as saying that ECB may raise rates as price pressures [...]
Consider that falling labor income implies falling consumption for households, which have already been hard hit by a massive loss of wealth. Most who saw their 401k’s chopped to 201k’s, didn’t reinvest in the market. With consumption accounting for 70% of US GDP, this implies that this recession will last longer, and that economic recovery for 2010 will be anemic at best. Next look at President Obama and his economic [...]
