The annual cost to the taxpayer of supporting the Queen is rising by £5m, following changes to the way the monarch’s role is funded.
The Sovereign Grant, used to fund a number of official royal duties, pay staff and maintain palaces, has been set at £36.1m for 2013/14.
The figure is up from the £31m received the previous year, which included an extra £1m for the Diamond Jubilee.
Buckingham Palace said spending [...]
Employers are bracing for a little-noticed fee in the federal health-care law that will charge them $63 for each person they insure next year, one of the clearest cost increases companies face when the law takes full effect.
The fees will hit most large U.S. employers, and several have been lobbying to change the program. (snip)

Congress’s non-partisan investigative arm said Wednesday President Obama is stretching the law to give bonuses to mediocre privateMedicare plans — an $8 billion program the auditors had already urged the administration to cancel.
In a pointed letter, the Government Accountability Office’s chief lawyer said the administration hasn’t shown that it can learn anything by a “demonstration” project to pay bonuses to average-performing plans in the Medicare Advantage program. The lawyer also questioned “the agency’s legal [...]

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday dismissed harsher sanctions imposed on Iran this month over its disputed nuclear activity, saying the country was “100 times stronger” than before.
A European Union embargo on Iranian crude oil took full effect on July 1 – a joint effort with the United States to force Tehran to curb nuclear energy work the Western powers say is a camouflaged bid to develop [...]
Many observers now take a jaundiced view of international sanctions, describing them variously as toothless, counter-productive or misdirected.
For once, though, they appear to be working.
According to the New York Times’ Thomas Erdbrink and Clifford Krauss, the oil embargo imposed by the U.S. and EU — which only took full effect last week — is already crippling the Iranian economy:
“After years of defiance and insistence that sanctions were barely being felt at home, Iranians are acknowledging [...]

But already the rally that immediately followed has fizzled. At issue is how European leaders will work out the tricky [...]
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Tuesday it had successfully tested medium-range missiles capable of hitting Israel as a response to threats of attack, the latest move in a war of nerves with the West.
Israel says it could attack Iran if diplomacy fails to secure a halt to its disputed nuclear energy program. The United States also has military force as a possible option but has repeatedly encouraged the Israelis to be [...]
An ‘Obamacare’ Cost Explosion? Hardly — GOP Distorts CBO Report
SAHIL KAPUR MARCH 15, 2012, 2:09 PM 3804 31
Republicans and conservative media are cherry-picking a figure in a new Congressional Budget Office spending estimate (PDF) to assert that the cost of “Obamacare” has nearly doubled to $1.76 trillion. But the claim ignores the corresponding savings during the additional period of the spending projection, thus distorting the actual cost estimates of [...]
2012 Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain sat down with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s editorial board today for a series of video interviews — and the results are actually painful to watch.
Cain appears out of his depth in all of the videos, but never more so than when he is asked whether or not he agrees with President Obama’s handling of the conflict in Libya.
We’d give you the transcript, but you [...]
Thirty-four states plus the District of Columbia have text-messaging bans. In 31 states and D.C., it is a primary offense, meaning drivers can be pulled over specifically for texting.
Police nationwide are issuing a growing number of tickets for texting while driving as more states make the practice a primary offense and become aggressive in cracking down.
Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) spokesman Jonathan Adkins says [...]

Whoever is going to become the next mayor of the Miami-Dade County , would be doomed if he/she decides to balance the budget by simply cutting the budget! No matter how one looks at it, there would be over 50,000 job loss as a consequence of this contractive economic measure. One does not need to be a clairvoyant to figure out the unemployment involved when 60 [...]

The female mountain lion, estimated to weigh 125 pounds, was first seen on railroad tracks near downtown around 8:30 a.m. by Union Pacific employees. [...]
Weakness in the US dollar, which is causing everything to go up—including gas prices, food and stocks—is unlikely to go away soon as a selling frenzy hits the currency market.
The greenback is approaching pre-financial crisis lows and threatening to smash through its all-time low when measured against the world’s predominant national currencies.
A combination of factors accounts for the weakness, with the Federal [...]
*Real estate is in such bad shape esp with all that shadow inventory. How significant is real estate in GDP?
* With real estate in the hole, labor is not as mobile since people are stuck with their underwater houses. So, there’s imbalance of supply and demand of labor.
* States and local unlike Fed cannot print money and run deficits. It’s been just a few months since new fiscal year started. [...]
An overly strong Yen is disastrous for the Japanese economy which is mostly driven by exports as it cause the earnings from their exports, particularly to the US, to plunge to levels where they can’t and don’t make any profits. It isn’t an issue of just “weak” versus “strong” but rather an issue of what is a fair, reasonable and proper rate for the currency exchange rate between the US [...]
