A 7.3 earthquake hit near Fukushima. That is large earthquake … bigger than the 1989 San Francisco earthquake (But it is much smaller than last year’s 9.0 Japanese earthquake, which produced almost 1,000 times more energy.)
Here are webcam videos showing today’s shaking at Fukushima:

A mini tsunami – only 1 yard high – resulted in Ishinomaki, a city in Miyagi prefecture. The earthquake appears to have caused only very limited injuries and property damage.
There are no reports of damage at [...]

New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut Nuclear Plants In Path of Storm
Preface: We hope and expect that the severity of the hurricane is being overblown, and that the nuclear plants in the Northeast will ride out the storm without any incident.
We noted Friday that more than a dozen nuclear plants are near Hurricane Sandy’s path.
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen says that there are actually 26 nuclear plants in the path of the hurricane, and that the spent [...]
From Washington’s Blog:
The director of the National Security Agency under Ronald Reagan – Lt. General William Odom – noted:
Because the United States itself has a long record of supporting terrorists and using terrorist tactics, the slogans of today’s war on terrorism merely makes the United States look hypocritical to the rest of the world.
Odom also said:
By any measure, the U.S. has long used terrorism. In ’78-’79 the Senate was trying [...]

Gundersen: I think people are beginning to think maybe we can never dismantle these plants, “Maybe we just fill them with concrete and walk away.”
[Radioactivity] ultimately does leech through the concrete.
[...]
How are we ever going to knock these plants down? Maybe it’s better to just entomb them and walk away.

Fukushima Fuel Pools Are an American National Security Issue
After visiting Fukushima, Senator Ron Wyden warned that the situation was worse than reported … and urged Japan to accept international help to stabilize dangerous spent fuel pools.
An international coalition of nuclear scientists and non-profit groups are calling on the U.N. to coordinate a multi-national effort to stabilize the fuel pools. And see this.
Fuel pool number 4 is, indeed, the top short-term threat facing humanity.
Anti-nuclear physician Dr. Helen Caldicott [...]

If they are MOX fuel, containing 6% plutonium, one fuel rod has the potential to kill 2.89 billion people. If this pool collapses, as Senator Wyden is now saying too, we would face a mass extinction event from the release of radiation in those rods.
That is, if we aren’t in one already. Nuke experts like Arnie Gundersen and Helen Caldicott are prepared to evacuate their families to the [...]

The problems at reactor 4 are the greatest short-term threat to humanity and has the potential to destroy our world and TEPCO doesn’t have the money to fix them.

TEPCO plans to use a robot today to photograph possible damage inside the suppression pool at the bottom of Fukushima’s damaged number 2 reactor.
TEPCO is the operator of the tsunami damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan.
“We want to check whether there is no deformation or damage in the suppression pool. And, with any luck, we hope to see areas where water (injected into the reactor as [...]

The Greatest Single Threat to Humanity: Fuel Pool Number 4
We noted days after the Japanese earthquake that the biggest threat was from the spent fuel rods in the fuel pool at Fukushima unit number 4, and not from the reactors themselves. See this and this.
We noted in February:
Scientists say that there is a 70% chance of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hitting Fukushima this year, and a 98% chance within the next 3 years.
Given that nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen [...]
We noted in August that some parts of Tokyo have more radiation than existed in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zones. And see this and this.
There are indications that radiation levels are increasing in Tokyo.
Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen took 5 random soil samples in Tokyo recently, and found that all 5 were so radioactive that they would be considered radioactive waste in the United States, which would have to be specially disposed [...]

Instead of Protecting People, Governments Cover Up by Raising “Safe” Radiation Levels
American and Canadian authorities have virtually stopped monitoring airborne radiation.
Neither American nor Canadian authorities are testing fish for radioactivity.
Does that mean that we don’t have to worry about radiation from Fukushima?
It is a little hard to know, given that what is deemed a “safe level” of radiation is determined by politics … rather than science. For example, current safety standards are based on the ridiculous [...]

1) The Japanese are allowing contaminated material (farm waste) to be burned.
2) Eventually this ends up in the Pacific Northwest…these “rain-outs” will be depositing hot particles onto the soil along the West Coast for another year.
3) Confirmation that a “strategic decision was made at the highest level of the U.S. government to downplay Fukushima…we are not sampling the food supply that [...]
Scientific experts believe Japan’s nuclear disaster to be far worse than governments are revealing to the public.

“Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind,” Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice president, told Al Jazeera.
Japan’s 9.0 earthquake on March 11 caused a massive tsunami that crippled the cooling systems at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) nuclear plant in Fukushima, [...]

Fort Calhoun near Omaha, Nebraska
“On June 6, 2011, the Fort Calhoun pressurized water nuclear reactor 20 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska entered emergency status due to imminent flooding from the Missouri River. A day later, there was an electrical fire requiring plant evacuation.
Then, on June 8th, NRC event reports confirmed the fire resulted in the loss of cooling for the [...]

No Fly Zone Over Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant Due to “Hazards
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction over the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant until further notice due to “Hazards”. This would normally be a precautionary measure after an electrical fire disabled cooling for the spent fuel rod pool as outlined below. The question is why is this still [...]
Original estimates of xenon and krypton releases remain the same, but a TEPCO recalculation shows dramatic increases in the release of hot particles. This confirms the results of air filter monitoring by independent scientists. Fairewinds’ Arnie Gundersen explains how hot particles may react in mammals while escaping traditional detection. Reports of a metallic taste in the mouth, such as those now being reported in [...]
Closing Ranks: The NRC, the Nuclear Industry, and TEPCO are Limiting the Flow of Information (Ivo M.)
Arnie Gundersen discusses inconstancies between what the NRC, TEPCo, and the Nuclear Industry are saying privately and publicly. Documents from the French nuclear firm, Areva, and the NRC reveal what the industry knows about the Fukushima disaster.
Closing Ranks: The NRC, the Nuclear Industry, and TEPCo. Are Limiting the Flow of [...]
A copy of the NRC Assessment can be found at http://djysrv.blogspot.com/2011/04/nrc-threat-assessment-of-fukushima.html . Remember, this assessment is 11 days old. I’d love to read a current one.
It may be semanitcs, but the assessment does not specifically state that the containments are “more vulnerable to rupture in one of the aftershocks”. Quoting from Addl Misc Considerations, para B.1. for units 1 – 3, “When flooding containment, consider the implications [...]
