Two super-high-energy particles have been detected by IceCube, the massive neutrino telescope buried in Antarctic ice. These two neutrinos, one seen in August 2011 and the other in January 2012, have enough energy to be from an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray source, such as a gamma-ray burst. “They are at least 10 times the energy of any neutrino we’ve seen before.” — 28th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, Beijing

(Reuters) - The White House is “dusting off old plans” for a potential release of oil reserves to dampen rising gasoline prices and prevent high energy costs from undermining the success of Iran sanctions, a source with knowledge of the situation said on Thursday.

Just over 1,200 years ago, the planet was hit by an extremely intense burst of high-energy radiation of unknown cause, scientists studying tree-ring data have found.
The radiation burst, which seems to have hit between ad 774 and ad 775, was detected by looking at the amounts of the radioactive isotope carbon-14 in tree rings that formed during the ad 775 growing season in the Northern Hemisphere.
The increase in 14C levels [...]

If you’re a fan of finding gravity wells so strong that science fiction would have them create wormholes into other sides of the universe, NASA has a brand new project you’ll find rather interesting. This week the folks at NASA have launched NuSTAR, an array otherwise known as the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, and it aims to fly through space seeking out the Black Hole itself. [...]
1. Debt in the US has been exploding since 1980. It’s not just US Govt debt, Corporations and Households are also extremely over-extended.
2. Debt in Japan and Europe is just as big a problem as in the US.
3. The US Dollar is steadily losing its reserve status. The fallout from this will be nothing short of a default on US Govt debt and the implosion of the US economy.
4. Manufacturing [...]
The S&P 500 has had the best start to the year since 1997, and Gas Prices are accelerating rapidly. Two interesting analogs may be useful to think about the next moves in these markets and whether we see divergence.
S&P 500 2012 performance (green) compared to 2011 (orange) and 1997 (blue) signals perhaps a roll-over is due?
and while gas prices have risen rapidly, they are on the same pace (in percentage [...]
Wikipedia: An electromagnetic pulse (sometimes abbreviated EMP) is a burst of electromagnetic radiation. The abrupt pulse of electromagnetic radiation usually results from certain types of high energy explosions, especially a nuclear explosion, or from a suddenly fluctuating magnetic field. The resulting rapidly changing electric fields and magnetic fields may couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges.
Most Americans do not know this, but a single EMP [...]

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has decided to release 30 million barrels of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of a broader international effort to pump more 60 million barrels onto the world market over the next month.
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the release of oil is a response to oil supply disruptions caused by turmoil in the Middle East [...]
From Forbes:
In his second post-FOMC press conference, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke touched on every topic, admitting that the recovery was weaker than expected and that beyond temporary factors like supply chain disruptions in Japan and high energy prices, he was at a loss as to what was causing the soft patch. In a Q&A session with reporters, Bernanke said a disorderly default in Greece would [...]

Give the bent rebar, the pulverized concrete, twisted metal, and the general rubble level, this has every earmark of a relatively high-energy explosion, not an oil-based fire.
In fact, this is so blindingly obvious, that I hesitate to even pretend that I think there’s any sort of reasonable disagreement that can be had as to whether the outer containment building blew up or is suffering [...]

President Obama signed into law the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010, which will reform Wall Street and stop speculators from manipulating oil markets.
Two years ago, when we began this fight, record-high energy prices were severely damaging the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, few people knew about the damage caused by excessive oil speculation. We recognized that it would be an uphill battle to win legislation, but we continued on [...]

This bill stands up for the American consumer,
instead of the Wall Street oil trader, by proposing more strict rules on
oil speculation. I urge you to support Sen. Lincoln in her fight to curb
excessive speculation and protect average Americans from high energy
costs.
Crude oil prices are climbing towards $100 a barrel in spite of weak
worldwide demand. It is clear that excessive speculation, not market
forces or the adequacy of supply, is responsible for [...]
