Four African girls have created a generator that produces electricity for six hours using a single liter of urine as fuel.
The generator was unveiled at last week’s Maker Faire in Lagos, Nigeria, by the four teens Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin, all age 14, and Bello Eniola, 15.
So how exactly does the urine-powered generator work?
• Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates [...]
A reactor at the crippled San Onofre nuclear power plant is leaking hydrogen gas into the environment, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Although it is not yet known if the leaking gas is radioactive, Friends of Earth said the latest trouble at San Onofre is strong evidence that the plant is not safe to restart

I was also astonished to hear that many Japanese political leaders were not aware of the potential global catastrophe because they were not told anything about it by TEPCO. I find it difficult to understand their mindset. Why would the Japanese political leaders think it appropriate to depend on one source (with an obvious and inherent conflict of interest) to [...]
cienceDaily (May 9, 2012) — A detailed description of development of the first practical artificial leaf — a milestone in the drive for sustainable energy that mimics the process, photosynthesis, that green plants use to convert water and sunlight into energy — appears in the ACS journal Accounts of Chemical Research. The article notes that unlike earlier devices, which used costly ingredients, the new device is made from inexpensive materials and employs [...]

Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of Japan’s crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, said it detected the highest radiation to date at the site.
Geiger counters, used to detect radioactivity, registered more than 10 sieverts an hour, the highest reading the devices are able to record, Junichi Matsumoto, a general manager at the utility, said today. The measurements were taken at the base of the main ventilation stack for reactors No. 1 [...]
The image “could almost be a picture postcard of our own Milky Way”, said the ESO
Astronomers have released what they say is the best-yet picture of NGC 6744, a spiral galaxy described as a “sibling” of our own Milky Way.
The image was snapped by the European Southern Observatory’s MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope in Chile.
The galaxy lies 30 million light-years away, in the constellation Pavo.
While it is almost twice as large [...]

It appears to me that the disaster is spinning out of control rather quickly. The fire that reignited in the building was undoubetdly caused by heat from the spent fuel rods in the (now empty?) cooling pool. The building is inaccessible due to high radiation levels – VERY BAD. They are attempting to moderate a possibly developing nuclear reaction in the spent fuel with [...]

NHK, the Japanese broadcasting service, is reporting that fire has again broken out at reactor #4. The tentative plan to drop water on it with helicopters to replenish the water cooling the spent fuel has been abandoned as impractical. there is talk of trying to remove the outer shell to prevent the build up of hydrogen gas and allow the use of fire hoses [...]
