from Sovereign Man:
Surprise, surprise… the completely insolvent US government has yet another idea to raise revenue in the Land of the Free: a new tax!
The Marketplace Fairness Act was introduced some time ago, and we’ve discussed it before. But it’s now being rushed through Congress as quickly as possible.
It’s aim? To collect sales tax for online transactions. And in addition to being financially debilitating, the bill is also a bureaucratic nightmare.

Every time Congress has taken a serious look at proposals to boost Internet sales taxes, it has rejected them. That’s probably why pro-tax Senators are trying to rush through an online tax hike with as little consideration as possible.
As early as Monday, the Senate will vote on a bill that was introduced only last Tuesday. The text of this legislation, which would fundamentally change interstate commerce, only became available on [...]

Before the Senate passed its first budget in nearly four years, Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) proposed an amendment — the Marketplace Fairness Act — that would make it easier for states to collect online sales taxes. Despite the numerous policy and constitutional issues this bring, the amendment passed by a vote of 75 to 24.
Ron Paul, who didn’t seek re-election last year and serves as chairman of Campaign for Liberty, explained [...]
U.S. Ambassador Terry Kramer warned on Friday that a proposal to give a United Nations agency more control over the Internet is gaining momentum in other countries.
Proposals to expand the U.N.’s International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) authority over the Internet could come up at a treaty conference in Dubai in December. European telecommunications companies are pushing a plan that would create new rules that would allow them to charge more to [...]
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Online retailer Amazon.com has tried to become all things to all consumers, but in California, it is about to take on a role it has fought against for years: tax collector.
The change, which takes effect this weekend, comes after years of bitter back and forth between the world’s largest online mall and the California Legislature over whether Internet retailers should have to impose sales taxes on customers. [...]

Get Ready To Start Paying These Taxes Too
In the pre-dawn darkness of a chilly LA morning, my day started off with a chuckle. A friend in the reforestation business sent me an email detailing the US Department of Agriculture’s new ‘Christmas Tree’ tax that was approved yesterday. I thought it was a joke. It wasn’t.
One can only laugh at the absurdity of the government getting involved in [...]
New York faces a fiscal crisis, with a balanced budget six weeks overdue. An ongoing stalemate will damage the state’s AAA credit rating. Your best chance to short the Empire State is next week when $510 million of bonds go on sale.
It’s gonna be a LONG hot summer!
