By state law, medical marijuana is legal in Montana. Federal law, however, is another matter, as Chris Williams sadly found out.

Opinion from the New York Times, By Rebecca Richman Cohen
November 7, 2012

Our federal marijuana policy is increasingly out of step with both the values of American citizens and with state law. The result is a system of justice that is schizophrenic and at times appalling.

Though the federal government considers marijuana a [...]

November 5, 2012

We are now only [one day] away from Election Day, and it’s starting to look very much like at least one state will vote to legalize marijuana, possibly two, and, if the gods are really smiling down, three. It’s also looking like there will soon be at least one more medical marijuana state, and like California will finally reform its three strikes sentencing law.

There are also local [...]

Washington On Verge Of Being First State To Legalize Sale Of Marijuana

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington state is on the verge of becoming the first in the nation to let adults over 21 buy taxed, inspected marijuana at state-licensed shops.

It might not clear up more than a decade of confusion that resulted from the state’s medical marijuana law, or reverse the proliferation of dispensaries. But supporters say passing Initiative 502 on Nov. 6 could make drug laws more reasonable, prevent thousands of arrests [...]

Gavin Lesnick

September 27, 2012

The Arkansas Supreme Court has ruled that a proposed initiated act to legalize the medical use of marijuana can appear on the November ballot.

In an opinion released Thursday morning, the court denied a petition filed by the Coalition to Preserve Arkansas Values. The group had argued that the ballot’s name wasn’t complete, didn’t fully reflect the scope and impact of the proposal and would still violate [...]

Paul Ryan Talks Medical Marijuana Legalization: ?Let the States Decide?

The issue of legalizing medical marijuana is not high on the priority list for the Romney/Ryan ticket. However, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Thursday told Colorado station KRDO-TV that legalizing medical marijuana is a decision that should be made by individual states.

“My personal position on these issues has been let the states decide what they want to do with these things,” he said. “This is something that is [...]

The ban on marijuana “has done an impressive job of racking up racially-biased arrests, throwing people in jail, … and enriching psychotic Mexican drug lords. But it hasn’t stopped Americans from smoking a ton of weed.”

(NEWSER) – This November, three states will vote on whether to legalize marijuana for old-fashioned “getting-high purposes.” Colorado is the best bet—one poll has the public behind the bill by a 61-27 margin—but Oregon and/or Washington might as well, and even if all of them chicken out, Julian Brookes of Rolling Stone thinks the end of marijuana prohibition is nigh. “The status quo, people are starting to notice, is a total disaster.”

New York State Assembly passes medical marijuana bill A7347: a bill that would legalize marijuana for medical use

The New York State Assembly passed A7347; a bill that would legalize marijuana for medical use. The bill has been around the New York state legislature since 1997 but unable to gain any momentum, only making it out of the Assembly Health Committee five times and passing the Assembly once in 2008.

Often times, such controversial bills are held up in the committee process. Bills that pertain to or have a significant [...]

Connecticut has officially legalized medical marijuana, as the 17th state to do so.

Connecticut on Friday became the 17th U.S. state to legalize the medical use of marijuana.

The state’s Governor Dannel Malloy signed into law legislation allowing licensed physicians to certify an adult patient’s use of marijuana for medical purposes, according to a statement from the governor’s office.

The new law puts in place restrictions to prevent the kind of abuse that has plagued some of the 16 other states and the District of [...]

Medical Marijuana Passed By Connecticut House Of Representatives!

HARTFORD —

The House of Representatives voted late Wednesday night to legalize marijuana for medical purposes for adults — despite a letter from the state’s top federal prosecutor saying that those growing marijuana would be violating federal law.

The vote was 96-51 in favor.

Patients would be required to receive a prescription from a physician to receive marijuana to relieve pain from illnesses such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV and multiple sclerosis. The bill would allow some producers to cultivate and [...]

300+ Economists, including 3 nobel laureates, petition the US government to legalize marijuana

300 economists approached U.S politicians with facts and knowledge? I’m sure their advice will be well received:

Over 300 economists have signed on to an open letter to the President, Congress, Governors, and State Legislators asking them to allow this “country to commence an open and honest debate about marijuana prohibition.” The petition states that the undersigned “believe such a debate will favor a regime in which marijuana is legal but [...]

Colorado Democratic Party endorses Amendment 64 to Legalize Marijuana

Update below: Last month, a majority of attendees at the Denver Republican Assembly backed Amendment 64, the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act. And enthusiasm is even more widespread among Democrats. Saturday’s Dem state convention and assembly in Pueblo formally supported Amendment 64 — an action that proves to proponent Mason Tvert that the measure has growing appeal across party lines.

“While there may be more support among Democrats and independents, this is quickly becoming a [...]
