The Great Halls of China: Beijing builds country’s most expensive estate in the style of British stately homes – where the starting price is £10 million

The Western-style mansions with tall columns and impressive entrances wouldn’t look out of place on a sprawling English estate, however these are being built in China.

In a suburb of Beijing developers are building 39 Palladian mansions costing a minimum of £10m to create the country’s most expensive housing estate.

The Mentougou estate will be ready by the end of next year, but with the Chinese property market flooding with high-priced deserted [...]

The stories behind 10 of the greatest trades of all time

From Gresham’s Law:

Sometimes it seems like the investment community operates on the assumption that the world started in 1929 – or at least that the financial booms, busts, and speculators preceding the 1920s are irrelevant to the modern investor. We think this is misguided.

Just consider that this common worldview ignores an age where speculators lived in sprawling mansions on Fifth Avenue (as opposed to apartments in the same place measuring [...]

A new Tumblr culled the best of the best, labelling it simply ‘Rich Kids of Instagram’ and letting the pictures speak for themselves.

“Two former employees of the world’s largest Christian television channel Trinity Broadcasting Network are accusing the non-profit of spending $50 million of its funding on extravagant personal expenses. MITCH FEIERSTEIN: Behind the official announcements and yawn-inducing data about pension deficits there is a scam underway – and you are the ones being ripped off.

What is it? Is it something in the water of Downing Street? Some as-yet-unnamed version of Stockholm Syndrome where the victims fall in love with their captors? Or is hypocrisy in fact a contagious disease, something passed on by one government to the next along with the grace-and-favour mansions and the limousines?

I don’t know. But I do know that behind the bland official announcements and yawn-inducing data about pension deficits [...]

Here is what has been happening in Northern California with the glut of empty Mc Mansions…

A few years ago all of these private investment companies started showing up at the Court house steps and buying up all the houses at firesale prices. I know a few people that were the highest bidders however they didn’t get the property, an investment company did. Researching the purchases a bit further I found that many of the homes being sold BELOW the auction bid prices were going to the same [...]

Legislators feel the heat at South L.A. jobs summit

I took a seat in the Compton kitchen at Saturday’s Kitchen Table Summit in the gym at Inglewood High among more than 1,000 people who had been ferried in, fed and readied for protest by a union-backed advocacy group called Good Jobs LA.

The Good Jobs LA organizer at our table explained the problem this way:

“Rich people are buying their yachts and mansions and all this other [...]

U.S. Forces Were Unsure Bin Laden in House Until Meeting Him Face to Face

The U.S. forces who killed Osama bin Laden didn’t know for sure he was in a fortified villa near Islamabad until they swooped in and came face to face with the world’s most wanted terrorist.

While U.S. intelligence officers had concluded there was a “strong probability” bin Laden was living in the compound near the Pakistani capital Islamabad, all they could be positive about was that it was a high-value individual, [...]

Tax The Rich? Good Luck With That

By WALTER WILLIAMS

I’ve often said that I wish there were some humane way to get rid of the rich. If you asked why, I’d answer that getting rid of the rich would save us from distraction by leftist hustlers promoting the politics of envy.

Not having the rich to fret over might enable us to better focus our energies on what’s in the best [...]

Raising Gas Prices Killing Spring Breaks

From AP:

With gas prices above $4 in some states, Americans are canceling spring break plans and rethinking summer vacation, and some tourist destinations are offering gas vouchers of as much as $50 to talk people out of giving up and staying home.

At Mount Rushmore, only about 37,000 people decided in March that seeing the four granite-etched presidential sculptures was worth the trip, down from [...]
