In September 2014, Scottish voters will decide whether to leave the UK and become an independent state. It will be a straightforward Yes-No referendum, but each person’s vote will be based on a mixture of rational and emotional considerations. The currency question touches both, and therefore it could be the deciding factor in this historic decision. Read more
What is happening to you America? Once upon a time, the United States was a place where free enterprise thrived and the greatest cities that the world had ever seen sprouted up from coast to coast. Good jobs were plentiful and a manufacturing boom helped fuel the rise of the largest and most vibrant middle class in the history of the planet. Cities such as Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, [...]
Anyone else finding the official explanation a little hard to swallow?
About 20,000 Central Texans were left without power early Friday as a mixture of lingering dust from dry weather and a steady flow of overnight drizzle wreaked havoc for local electric utilities and their customers.
The muddy mixture helped trigger power surges and smoldering fires atop dozens of power poles, leading to the outages.
Austin Energy saw about 10,000 customer outages as [...]
Gel made by embedding neural stem cells in a mixture of blood clotting protein and growth chemicals
A stem cell gel developed by scientists can regenerate broken spinal cord nerves, research has shown.
The gel is applied to the site of an injury. In rats with completely severed spinal cords, it produced an ‘astonishing degree’ of nerve growth, U.S. scientists said.
Treated animals which were previously paralysed experienced ‘significant’ functional improvement and were [...]
It is an urban myth that terrifies young children.
Swallow a piece of chewing gum and it will take seven years to pass through your gut before it is digested. Or so they say.
An even hoarier tale has it that swallowed gum can wrap itself around your heart.
But what does happen if you should accidentally eat a stick of gum?
Indigestible: But the gut just keeps moving chewing gum along until it [...]
The saddest part about the recent decision in Brussels, Belgium, to fine “offensive language” is how utterly predictable it was.
When you combine the inherently expansionist character of government with the nanny-state sensibilities of the modern technocrat, the necessary outcome is total control of the individual — his or her comprehensive subsumption into the collective will.
Since there is no more potent expression of individuality than speech, and since there is no [...]

Three vaccines used to prevent respiratory disease in chickens have swapped genes, producing two lethal new strains that have killed tens of thousands of fowl across two states in Australia, scientists reported on Friday.
The creation of the deadly new variant was only possible because the vaccines contained live viruses, even though they were weakened forms, said Joanne Devlin, lead author of the paper published in the journal Science.

Allied Gold – which has gold and copper production, exploration and development projects in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands – leapt 48½ – 53pc –to 140p after Australian gold producer St Barbara unveiled a £360m takeover bid for the business.

From Zero Hedge:
When it comes to the future, suddenly torn by economic uncertainty driven by a plunging stock market and a tanking economy, the talking heads and the sellside brigade have opined: more QE, preferably in the form of asset purchases.
After all it was none other than Goldman earlier today who said that “our confidence that the FOMC will ease policy once more at the June 19-20 meeting has also [...]
House speaker John Boehner detailed the tough side of his job in a candid interview, saying that one of his lesser-known roles is that of a principal to unruly representatives.
‘We got some of the smartest people in the country who serve here, and some of the dumbest,’ he said of the elected officials.
He said that the mixture of personalities- and abilities- is essentially intentional as it is reflective of the [...]

“Tax revenue, desperately needed in order to consolidate the national finances, has dropped off. A mixture of fear, hopelessness and anger is brewing in Greek society”
“If you take away my family’s bread, I’ll take you down — the government needs to know that,” Meletis says. “And don’t call us anarchists if that happens! We’re heads of our families and we’re desperate.”
He predicts the situation will only become more heated. “Things [...]
1. ‘Never Short a Dull Market’ Yes, that old chestnut.
The reasoning behind the ever-popular market maxim is pretty simple: Skeptical investors tend to wait until a market peaks to truly buy in. By that time, it’s too late, and sellers start taking over. When the market is dull and makes quiet moves up, as has been the case for most of 2010, the direction often continues higher.
“People are content to [...]
