From Eric Peters Autos:
I’ll probably get in trouble. After all, I write new car reviews. Advising people not to buy new cars is not what you’d probably expect.
But, here’s the fulsome scurvy truth: I – and every car journalist I know – drive used. Because we know.
And now, I’m gonna spill the beans, give you the straight dope – so that you’ll know, too. Here goes.
* A new car is [...]
Looking to buy a new car, truck or crossover? You may find it more difficult to stretch the household budget than you expected, according to a new study that finds median-income families in only one major U.S. city actually can afford the typical new vehicle.
The typical new vehicle is now more expensive than ever, averaging $30,500 in 2012, according to TrueCar.com data, and heading up again as makers curb [...]

In a recent newsletter update and video message, Peter Schiff explains how the official price inflation measurement is not reflecting the daily reality. That is because since the 1970?s the preferred government inflation metrics have changed thoroughly. Beginning in the early 1980?s the methodologies were altered to compensate for a variety of consumer behavior. The new “chain weighted CPI” for instance incorporates changes in relative spending, substitution bias, and [...]
WASHINGTON -
Many motorists don’t know it, but it’s likely that every time they get behind the wheel, there’s a snitch along for the ride.
In the next few days, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to propose long-delayed regulations requiring auto manufacturers to include event data recorders – better known as “black boxes” – in all new cars and light trucks. But the agency is behind the curve. Automakers [...]
UPDATE: Sept 5th
Subprime Auto Loans Accelerating (Again)
It is remarkable that we greedy ignorant short-term-focused human beings never seem to learn that driving forward and looking in the rear-view mirror can only end in disaster. Forget ‘dancing while the music plays’ or other such ‘defenses’ of herd ignorance, the most recent data regarding Auto Loans is simply mind-blowing:
Subprime borrowers received 56.46 percent of loans on used cars in the quarter, up from [...]
Are you in the dead zone?
Engineers have come up with a whole new way driving using just facial expressions after creating a gadget that controls a car’s functions using nods and winks.
The infra-red sensor is mounted on the dash board and recognises the driver’s facial expression to control the car.
A computer concealed inside the car translates the gestures which corresponds to a list of commands for the radio, Sat Nav, heating and mobile phone.
The gestures, [...]
eBay has started listing several new cars a day on its site, but rather than let potential buyers bid up, they’re making them wait as the price slowly drops.
The car prices start at their MSRP, then for every hour they don’t sell the price is lowered by $500.
There are definitely deals to be had during this promotion as the average savings yesterday was $8,464.29.
To participate in the reverse auction, just sign in to the site with your eBay [...]
Demand for new passenger cars fell sharply across the European Union in May, reflecting weak consumer confidence in the wake of the financial crisis.
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said new car registrations totalled 1,106,845 vehicles, down 8.7% compared to the same month last year.
France led the decline with a 16.2% market contraction, closely followed by Italy, which fell 14.3%.
Only the UK market grew, rising 7.9%.
EU-wide five-month sales figures for [...]
From Eric Peters Autos:
You probably know all about checking the air pressure of your car’s tires to make sure it’s up to spec – columns like that are as inescapable as “news” stories about the Kardashians. So I thought it might be good to mention five things about cars you may not have heard about:
* Radar detectors and some new cars may not be compatible –
That’s because a growing number [...]
From Eric Peters Autos:
You’ll probably never read a road test review by me of the Nissan Leaf, or the Chevy Spark, or the Toyota RAV4 electric. And that may tell you everything you need to know about these vehicles.
I can’t review them because they can’t make it down here for me to review.
“Down here” being about 220 miles and five hours’ driving time from the hubs where the car companies [...]
Not satisfied with putting federal restrictions on driver distractions like cellular phones, the federal government is pursuing technology to prevent cars from starting if drivers are legally drunk–even if they don’t have a DUI record.
Urged on by anti-alcohol groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Senate on a bipartisan vote OK’d a little-known amendment to the just-passed highway bill to provide $24 million over two years to study the“Driver Alcohol [...]
From Eric Peters Autos:
Moore’s law applies to cars, too.
OK, the pace of change is not quite as rapid – but it has upticked tremendously over the past 20 years. Even more so over the past five years.
For example, most 2012 transmissions (manual or automatic) have at least six speeds now – and seven and eight-speed transmissions are becoming common – even in mid-priced, family-type cars (the 2012 Chrysler 300, for [...]

From Forbes:
While auto insurance rates are largely based on personal factors, including a person’s age, gender, driving record and address, the particular make and model of vehicle you choose can significantly affect your rates. According to an extensive survey conducted for Insure.com, minivans, mid-priced crossover SUVs, and pickup trucks are among the most affordable vehicles to insure for 2012, with (no surprise here) premium sports coupes and luxury cars commanding [...]

Ernest Markey lost his stone-cutting business in 2009. He then sold his home for half a million dollars less than its value at the peak of the housing bubble and moved with his wife, Marie, to a smaller home in a less affluent suburb. They gave up two new cars and bought one. Used.
The Markeys have since patched together a semblance of their old life, [...]
Used Car Prices Hit Record High In April
Prices for used cars hit a record high in April and are expected to climb even higher. It seems car production cutbacks in this recession are making used vehicles a hot commodity. High gas prices are slowing down the market for new cars. Owners are hanging on to their old ones, so fewer trade-ins are making it to [...]
Check out the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus on AOL Autos.
The last time there was a big run-up in gas prices it helped push U.S. automakers to the brink of ruin. This time, things are different.
Now, the U.S. auto industry is much more competitive than it has been in a long time, offering a lineup of fuel efficient cars that people actually want to buy.
Take the Chevrolet Cruze (26 City / 36 [...]
From WSJ:
TOKYO—New auto sales in Japan posted their biggest-ever drop in April, as a parts shortage caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami cut into production of vehicles and reduced supplies of new vehicles to dealerships, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Monday.
Sales of new cars, trucks and buses tanked 51% from a year earlier in April to 108,824 vehicles—the lowest-ever monthly volume, the [...]
Just the Facts:
* Toyota on Monday said it has started measuring the radiation levels of its vehicles bound for export in order to “provide customer peace of mind” in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor disaster.
* The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association on Monday said it has “initiated its own procedures to test the radiation levels of vehicles produced in Japan.”

Car salesman Liu Jun enjoyed the best time of his career in December. After shifting 19 cars in the first 23 days, he was already looking ahead to lavishing his family with expensive gifts at Spring Festival.
Less than one month later, the 25-year-old is fighting to keep his job.
Since Christmas Eve, the day after Beijing announced strict measures to limit the number of [...]

As an international student (from South-East Asia) studying economics in the US, it is very evident that many of the economic models used in the States cannot be applied elsewhere. I recently spent 2 months in China before coming back to the States. The economy there is booming. And i don’t mean government reported GDP data. I mean in real life. On the streets, everyone is busy doing [...]

The Bernanke Put is like an inverse steroid, causing loss of muscle mass and obesity
As the dollar’s value declines and commodity prices rise, it will cause unemployment to rise. Consider that people living on fixed income and stagnate wages will not be able to afford to buy as much goods and services. People still need to eat, buy energy to get to work or heat [...]

Why is that? Because the corresponding “Boom and Bust and Boom” cycles continually wipe out the little guy and allow the PigMen to pick up assets on the cheap and ride the recovery road to new riches.

Is it any accident that all the perma-screechers like Nouriel Roubini are still driving 6-year old Subaru station wagons with paint sunburned off the roof [...]

New car sales fell sharply in August for the second consecutive month, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have shown.
August saw 55,305 new cars registered – down 17.5% compared with August 2009, the SMMT said.
The industry body warned that the market would remain tough for the rest of the year.
However it reiterated that it expected more than two million new cars to be sold in 2010.
That would [...]
