Governor issues Christmas Eve pardons

Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday pardoned 79 convicted people, most who committed low-level drug offenses, in an act that is for common governors to perform around Christmas and New Year’s.

All of the people who received pardons had completed their sentences and had not committed any criminal activity for more than a decade. The pardons address crimes as far back as a sentence handed down in 1954 for a robbery.

JACKSON, Mississippi (CNN) -

 

Mississippi’s attorney general said Thursday that the state may have to issue a nationwide manhunt after four pardoned murderers left jail and “hit the road running.”

“We’ll catch ‘em. It’s just a matter of time,” Attorney General Jim Hood told CNN.

The four were among nearly 200 convicted criminals to whom Gov. Haley Barbour granted clemency or a pardon in a final act before leaving office this week.

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour pardoned four convicted murderers who worked at the Governor’s Mansion, releasing them from prison in the final days of his term in office, state officials said on Monday.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Monday pardoned five people convicted of charges ranging from intent to distribute marijuana to running an illegal gambling business.

And he issued his first commutation, ordering the release of a woman next month after serving 10 years on a 22-year sentence for cocaine distribution.
