EPA reverses water pollution decision after lobbyist steps in: A Texas mining project was approved despite contamination fears, exposing a troubling pattern of aquifer exemption

When Uranium Energy Corp. sought permission to launch a large-scale mining project in Goliad County, Texas, it seemed as if the Environmental Protection Agency would stand in its way.

To get the ore out of the ground, the company needed a permit to pollute a pristine supply of underground drinking water in an area already parched by drought.

Further, EPA scientists feared that radioactive contaminants would flow from the mining site into [...]

Wary of Smallpox Attack, U.S. Buys Up a Costly Drug

The United States government is buying enough of a new smallpoxmedicine to treat two million people in the event of a bioterrorism attack, and took delivery of the first shipment of it last week. But the purchase has set off a debate about the lucrative contract, with some experts saying the government is buying too much of the drug at too high a price.

The spider that loses its penis during sex to make it more fierce in battle against love rivals

The phrase ‘eunuch’ has derogatory connotations for us humans – but it is a different matter for spiders.

The male nephilengys malabarensis spider loses its spider penis when it has sex with a female, which is in itself a clever (if potentially painful) evolutionary trick, as it plugs up the lady spider’s genitals and stops [...]

Valérie Trierweiler may revolutionise role of France’s first lady

If François Hollande has styled himself as Mr Normal – recently photographed buying fruit compote in a Paris supermarket and saying he would continue to do so after he’s elected “if the fridge is empty” – his partner, Valérie Trierweiler, could revolutionise the unofficial role of France’s first lady.

If, as she has promised, the 46-year-old journalist keeps her contract for the magazine Paris Match and continues to work, it would [...]

City bans GROUPON

As Ronald Reagan famously quipped, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’” Portland, Oregon, though, really is here to help. The problem is that the city hasn’t created laws to benefit Portlanders—it’s created them to benefit one specific industry, at the expense of every consumer in the area.

The Portland city council two years ago put in place regulations [...]
